Compacted math placement

Anonymous
Does anyone know when those notifications go out? My older child was in the first year and we didn't receive word until the last week of school. But since the assessments were earlier this year I was wondering if it would be sooner. Does anyone remember when they heard last year?

I can't remember exactly but I believe we heard at the very end of the year - maybe even after school let out.

Why do they assess now if they don't let you know until school is letting out? MCPS is so obnoxious on the compacted math issue.

They're assessing throughout the year.

If you found out before the end of the year, what difference would it make?

The assessment is not a test. It's a long process done by the teachers. I believe that it started begining of the year, if not sooner. The teachers will take into account many factors when making the recommendations. The schools then compile the list and send to county for approval.

Last year we found out in June. I think it was before school let out, because you had to send back a permission form.

I find it annoying to get things after school lets out as well since then you can't get more information. Like last year one of my kids got a terrible report card after no interim or information from teacher indicating any kind of issue. There was no way to find out what was going on until the fall.

They send a list of names to the county for approval? What an amazing bureaucracy.

It is a test. The schools decided who would be evaluated at the beginning of the year. Since then the teachers have been giving the assessments/problems. It's five problems.

At our school they made their determinations of which kids to test at the end of the first quarter, right after parent-teacher conferences. Agreed that it is a test. I'm not sure if testing is complete, but I'm sure they've done several parts at least. One thing that is an improvement this year (at least at our ES) is that the administration notified all parents one way or the other with regard to whether they would be tested for compacted math.

So there are only 5 problems? What kind of problems are they? Do they take into account MAP score?

If they take into account MAP scores it is only to determine who is assessed. I don't know what the problems are but they have to orally explain and they get points for the explanation. My child needed a hint with one and she said that cost her two points.

My child's class has finished the assessment but we haven't heard anything further.

Notification comes around May.

What kind of questions was your child asked? Content questions or logic? My kid keeps getting pulled out for enrichment by the math specialist but they do logic brain bending stuff not anything that would be taught in the classroom.
