Middle school registration process

Anonymous
We've received instructions for middle school registration. Kids were pre-registered for English, Social Studies, Science and PE. We were allowed to choose a math course and electives. My son chose IM instead of Math 6 despite the fact that his teacher recommended him for Math 6. I support him in that decision, as he was bored to tears all last year. I'm concerned, however, about the school's response. What do you think they are going to do?

Have you talked to the teacher? Have you talked to the elementary-school counselor?

I am under the impression that all the students taking IM next year at middle school will have already covered Grade 6 material (compacted math 5/6 this school year). Your child will not have done that. I would guess that the middle school will tell you "no" based on this.

He did that on his own accord. His teacher volunteered to do extra work with him at recess.

Why would his teacher recommend him for Math 6, if you say that they have already covered it all that during recess this year?

Because all teachers have to recommend all Math 5 students for Math 6. The system has become extremely rigid. He can't do anything else, even though he expressly told me that my son would do fine in IM.

Then get thee down to your MS and fight for it and I would make sure I had a letter from his teacher saying what you just said.

I think this is my question - now that he is registered for IM, the ball is in the school's court, isn't it? They would have to contact me to resolve the discrepancy? I really don't want to get confrontational unless I have to.

I'm personally so confused. My son is in math 5 and was told by his teacher he is recommended for IM. I understand about missing material but I'm confident that he doesn't have gaps because he's been helping his older sister with her math all year and hasn't been stumped yet. I'd hoped he would finally have a chance to have his placement corrected.

The teacher told you that somebody won't let him recommend your son for Math 6? Who won't let the teacher recommend your son for Math 6?

I've heard about other parents who talked with school counselor about bumping child up in math. School may make you sign a form saying showing understanding that your child may struggle in the class.

Cabin John. After seeing this thread I followed up with our elementary math teacher and he said he will be advocating for his placement. I'm fine if they want to test him. He can definitely demonstrate his knowledge.

If student did not take compacted math 5/6, they will be tested in the summer.
