I used to get to the gym but with two kids and work I don't have time to go and don't want to pay a babysitter to watch them so I can get a workout (not that I could even get one for an hour anyway). Neither of my kids are fans of the gym daycare and DH works a ton of hours so I can't go early in the am or at night while he watches them. When the weather is nice I try to do a lot outside but I don't like to walk/run with the kids in the stroller when it's cold and icy. I know I need to do *something* on a regular basis so I was thinking of getting a used treadmill or elliptical to do in the evenings after the kids are asleep. I keep wondering though if I'll really do it or it will end up being a place to hang clothes or for my kids to play For those who have some equipment at home, do you use it often? Would you recommend treadmill or elliptical? I feel like I get a better workout on a treadmill but it will have to be upstairs for space reasons and I don't want to be shaking the house running so for that reason I'm leaning towards elliptical. TIA! ~out of shape mama

I LOVE MY TREADMILL! I put it in our TV room, and there's a nice out of the way place for it. For me, treadmills are BORING AS ALL HELL, and having a TV to watch is essential for my enjoyment of it. I'm also EXCEPTIONALLY mindful of its danger to curious little kids, so it's turned off, unplugged, and the safety magnet is hidden away up very very high where the kiddies can't get to it. It received a lot of use these past 7 years since #1 was born. I don't use it much anymore, though, because we just got a dog and that means I'm out walking that little creature instead of plodding on the maquina. Nonetheless, it's been incredibly wonderful, and my machine was bought used and held up really well. Just the basics: Speed, incline, calories and MPH. I had it tuned up twice since I've had it. |

DH has the Bowflex adjustable weights, a bench, and a pullup bar at home. I have an elliptical and the P90X DVD's. Treadmill was out of the question because of knee problems.
We each work out at least 3x/week at home. Prior to investing in the equipment, we had gym memberships but went maybe once a month because it's such a hassle with kids. Now we can watch tv and work out after the kids go down for the evening. It's worked out really well for us! |

We each use our treadmill 3-4 times/week. It's a lifesaver. A few caveats: we're both avid runners, and were running 4-6x/week anyway, pre-kids. And we have a really nice sturdy treadmill. No bells and whistles, but sturdy. I always notice how awful the hotel treadmills are when I travel compared to ours.
We put up a small tv in front of ours and bought a Roku 2 to use with it. The Roku 2 has a headphone jack in the remote, which sits nicely in the treadmill cupholder. |
| I just do pilates. I watch Blogilates videos on Youtube. |
I have a collection of over 200 workout videos. Cardio, weight training and yoga are in my collection.
I love working out at home! |
| I bought a gym quality treadmill and elliptical and use both often. Best money I ever spent. Getting to the gym is impossible but I love that I can go in the basement and workout whenever it's convenient for me. |
Me again. I don't have a treadmill or elliptical. I have a step + 10 risers, dumbbells (pairs from 2 to 40lbs), resistance bands, barbells and plates, a squat rack plus various other assorted toys. I'm considering buying a spin bike, but have been considering that for over a year now. I work out 5-6 times/week. |

My house is too small for that kind of machine. However, I use a skipping rope and my actual stairs. I lift free weights, and do yoga poses. |

| Sometimes I do yoga at home. |
| Sometimes when DS is having an off day. Otherwise Iove my 2 hrs at the gym while he's in the play area. |
| OP - Rent the equipment you might like before you commit to a purchase. |
get a treadmill. I walk on mine 45 minutes every night (or however long my TV show is). |
| Op here - thanks! I am checking them out now on craigslist. Sounds like everyone does treadmills not ellipticals? Does anyone have it upstairs? I don't have anywhere else to put ours because downstairs is the kids' playroom and it's too small to add bulky equipment (aside from safety issues too). Do you get those rubber mats to put under? |
