Cats and rugs

I'm looking for an area rug for my living room and am wondering if anyone has had any experiences with rug types-- materials, weaves, brands-- that are more scratch resistant than others? I bought a fairly cheap wool rug from Crate and Barrel a couple of years ago, and my cat completely shredded it in no time. She never scratches the small synthetic rugs we have in front of our doors though. I've tried various deterrents over the years, with little success, so I'm resigned to some scratching, but I'd like something that holds up a little better if it exists.

My indoor/outdoor rug has been amazing with two cats. Flat weave so not very tempting to scratch, and all stains wash right out with soap and water. Bought it on Joss and Main.

Shag. Since the weave is loose there's nothing to pull. It's the tension on the claw that the cat enjoys.

OP here-- I've thought of that. Unfortunately, the cat also throws up a decent amount, and the thought of trying to clean cat barf out of a shag rug is unappealing at best. I do love the feel of shag though!

You should have at least two solid carpet covered cat posts in the house. Sprinkle with catnip to get them started. Our cats focus on the posts and leave the carpets and couches alone.

Funny, we just replaced a shag rug that our cat destroyed.

How about FLOR tiles? Our cats also throw up frequently, and it is great to be able to lift the affected tile(s) and clean thoroughly in the sink. Our cats don't shred the FLOR tiles, but if they did, we could replace with another (ordered half a dozen extra just for this purpose).

I bought two of those large area rugs from Home Depot. They aren't the softest, but the carpets look nice enough. One of my cats uses the carpets as a scratching post and the carpets still look ok ( I have only had them about 6 months though).
