HS graduation presents?

Anonymous
Ideas for DS to graduate HS this spring? The spring break thread made me think of it. He has worked very hard. We suggested a special family trip, but he seemed unenthused. Not doing a car (freshmen at his college can't have them anyway). May go with the trip, but appreciate any other ideas!

Sending D to a 2-wk trip to China. She is very excited about it.

We are buying things for DC's dorm room.

I cant imagine him wanting to go on a family trip. Send him on a trip with a best friend of his. Let them have fun.

We have five kids. Four have graduated. All of our kids get a computer. Boring, but necessary for college.

Wouldn't you have bought that for the kid anyway? Doesn't seem like a good present to me.

My two oldest kids are in their early 20's and still come on family vacations.

We are paying for college, that is gift enough. He needs a computer, sheets, comforter, towels, shower bucket........... why not give it to him as presents. We routinely give gift certificates to The Container Store to nieces and nephews.

That's nice but... Different. Older kids know they have a choice whereas teenagers may not feel the same.

You don't see a difference between a gc to The Container Store for relatives and one for you own kids? Okay.

He will be picking the stuff, if that is what you mean- including his computer. I just don't think any HS graduate needs a trip or other fancy present for graduating HS- unless that is the end. Then I can see celebrating it more.

NP - isn't that like taking your wife to buy cooking pots for mother's day? "Pick any pot you want dear" won't go very well with my DW!

Sort of agree. We didn't do much for graduation, in fact for DC 2 we did nothing. Not sure why as we pay for everything, dcs both have cars, we are one of the ones funding spring break, etc. Maybe because a $250,000 college education seemed like enough?

Apples and oranges. The parent child relationship is different that a spousal relationship. When one is starting out, it is nice to get practical gifts. Pots would also appropriate for a mom to give a son or a daughter.

How does college education= cooking pots? I think paying for college and giving a few dorm room supplies is enough.
