| The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by executive order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors. In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts. Each year, up to 141 students are named as Presidential Scholars, one of the nation's highest honors for high school students. |
It's a scholarship competition. http://www2.ed.gov/programs/psp/select.html |
Only 1 from Langley? |
I'd bet there are always a lot of VA nominees from TJ and that the number from other schools bounces around from year to year. Yes, only one from Langley this year, and none from Yorktown, Madison or Marshall. |
|
Not a scholarship - Selected kids get a paid trip to DC to meet with VIPs and get lauded.
Candidates are the highest scoring males and females in the SAT/ACT in each state who chose to share their scores, so these are kids with almost perfect test scores. Then they have to apply based on their academic records. |
|
Parents working it.
|
Really? The parents took the SATs and ACTs for their kids? |
| (Sorry, Yorktown booster! snicker, snicker) |
| I don't understand this. I thought it was supposed to be the top 20 male and top 20 female SAT scores in the state, but there are 101 names on the Virginia list. |
I think more populous states get to add some more names so the total is roughly 2,500 to 3,000 per year. |
| Also - students having the same test score as number 20 are included |
