tabletop material for kids play table

We have a fantastic midcentury vintage table base - bought a couple years ago as a side table, but my then one-year old knocked over the glass table top We should have seen that one coming. It's one of those tripod-y walnut bases where the tabletop just sits on top.

I just had a great idea to use the base as a table for my son in his playroom. It is the exact same height as his ikea play table, but a lot cuter. I want to put a tabletop on it that is a lot larger than the original one that came with it (it was only side-table size) so it ends up being maybe 3 feet in diameter. Balance and stability should be fine.

Any ideas for a durable tabletop material? Marker/crayon cleanup, food, water, chips and dings, etc. I obviously know that it will get beaten up regardless, but some table top materials won't last a week. Say, if I just painted plywood, it would look terrible very quickly. Marble stains, but is there a sealant I can put on that leads to easier cleanup? Can I get quartz or corian or other countertop materials cut into custom sizes? Marine-quality lacquer? Any other ideas?

Get ikea butcherblock with a heavy duty sealer.

I'd buy a piece of mdf at Home Depot and have them cut to size.

Laminate. Seriously.

You can get Quartz remnants just like with granite. Sometimes you can find bright colors that would be great for a playroom, you just have to visit and look.

I got an elasticized waterproof table cloth from this etsy shop and am very happy with it, it's held up great through two kids and 5 years.

My husband glued an ikea desk top (can buy them separate from desk legs) to a lack coffee table to make a train table for DS. He spray painted the desk top park with chalkboard paint so my son also draws on it.

OP, what about just doing wood but then painting it with the "chalkboard" paint. The kids could just color directly onto it.
