Pediatric psychiatrist that does CBT

Anonymous
Anyone know a psychiatrist that does Cognitive Behavioral Therapy? And does it well?

Psychiatrists only? Because IME psychologists and social workers are at least as good at CBT. It has more to do with training and aptitude than your degree.

For the most part psychiatrists no longer receive much training in psychotherapy of any sort. Older psychiatrists were trained in psychodynamic/psychoanalytic therapies, and many of those who are still practicing are among the best.

But if you want CBT probably a psychologist is your best bet. There are many who've been doing CBT throughout their training and practice.

There are social workers who do it also, but social work education is pretty brief, and the practitioner would have had to do some sort of post grad training in CBT to really learn it.

+1 and where are you located?

Unless you're also looking for med management, why a psychiatrist? If you're in Maryland, Alvord Baker has a number of psychologists and LCSWs who are very well versed in CBT.

CBT is generally practived by cognitive psychologists.

My kid sees the psychiatrists at the Ross Center for Anxiety. They work closely with the psychologists there who use CBT.

Cognitive psychology is actually an entirely different field. It's a research field -- essentially the study of how we think.

PP here, I am in VA. I was thinking if DC needed an RX for depression/anxiety than a psychiatrist who uses CBT would be able to give a prescription.

I am willing to start with a psychologist or LCSW who has lots of experience with CBT. I know in a recent thread someone mentioned Dr. McCarthy, but we are not sure if she is taking new patients and her wait list is at least 3 months long. Is there someone I can get in sooner in VA? Or I would travel to MD if there was someone highly recommended. TIA!

I'm the PP above whose kid goes to Ross.

He sees both a psychiatrist and a psychologist. The former sees him once a month, although he started at once every two weeks. Other than the initial intake, which lasted longer, her appointments last about 30 minutes. She monitors the medication, looks for side effects, makes decisions about when to titrate up or down. She gives some very basic advice about behavior concerns, things like telling him that a consistent wake up and bedtime will help with the insomnia and somnolence that are very common for kids with mental health issues, but there's no therapy or counseling.

He also sees a psychologist once a week. His psychologist sees him for a 50 minute session and works directly on the CBT.

He needs both. His psychologist can't prescribe. His psychiatrist might be able to do the CBT, but since she charges 3 times the hourly rate of the psychologist, we'll never find out! Anyway, it's not her specialty and she has less experience in it than the psychologist.

Our situation is the same as 9:11. My DD has anxiety and mild depression. We see a private psychologist for therapy. She does CBT and also other modalities for other issues as needed. The frequency of visits depends on how things are going. In crisis times it has been weekly. More typically she sees the therapist 1-2 times a month.

DD see the psychiatrist for medication management. When you initially start medication they will follow every 2-3 weeks, but we are now at maintenance and it's generally every 3 months.

We use a psychiatrist at the Chld and Family Counseling Group in Fair Oaks. They have psychologists on staff but we have not seen them. The therapist is closer to our home, at InStep in Merrifield.

We see Dr. McCarthy for medication management. She typically doesn't provide CBT but there is a psychologist in the same office suite that does.
