My son just turned four and knows his upper-case alphabet but still isn't picking up lower-case letters. Is this unusual for his age? |
Not at all. My son turned 4 in October and he just learned them this year in preschool. He used to write his name in all caps and has just started to use proper case (and usually has to be reminded). |
I taught my kid to read when he was 4. It wasn't very difficult. It was the norm for a lot of kids before public schools were wide spread.
Clinton's grandmother taught him all to read when he was five. Y'all are wasting your money or your kids are dumb. |
Totally normal. He'll get it. It takes some time. It's like learning a whole 'nother alphabet. |
and you're a troll. |
DON'T FEED THE TROLL. |
I don't think it's unusual. My daughter in in K at MCPS and learning lower case letters is one of the objectives for the year. If he knows all his upper case letters, sounds like he's doing just fine. Don't worry. |
This was about right for my kids. But, if you are worried about what he should be doing, you can check the MCPS website and get the expectations for what kids should have accomplished by the end of pre-K and kindergarten. |
My DS learned both upper and lowercase from the Leap Frog Fridge Phonics. Once he learned the uppercase letters, I bought the lowercase expansion pack. |
Do you have a link for what MCPS standards are for preK and K? I went online and looked but can't find anything. TIA |
Remember he is only 4! For most people on this board, I bet they didn't learn the alphabet until 1st grade (age 6). |
Here is the link:
http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/earlychi/eccurriculum.shtm It says by the end of prekindergarten they should recognize some letters and know they sounds that some consonants make. By the end of kindergarten they should be able to recognize and identify all upper and lower case letters. |
OP here.... thanks! I see it's very normal. I only have his small group of friends as a frame of reference although I know I shouldn't compare. |
Hi, OP, my daughter will be four in April and until recently she didn't know her lowercase letters, either, but then Super Why started teaching lowercase letters and suddenly she knows them all! So if you don't mind TV, you might want to try Super Why and see if that helps. |
You are so right, OP, that you shouldn't compare. The only people who talk about their kids' skills are the parents who think their kids are advanced so you never really get a good perspective of what to expect at each age. |
