I heard from a teacher friend that any teacher who did not show up on Tuesday was not docked because they were not able to drive in the snow/conditions; likewise, any teacher who DID show up, gets a "free" day in their pot (not sure if it would be PTO or how that would work).
While I can't guarantee this is 100% true, if it is, I find it very disconcerting. Not only does it send what I believe is a poor message to staff (i.e. why bother trying to show up on a snow day?); it is a huge financial burden on the district, read, all who pay taxes here! Has anyone heard about this? Thoughts? |
| Oh stop. Once you pay the tax, it isn't your money anymore. |
It is true. |

Stop OP and go volunteer somewhere with all this time you have worrying about such nonsense.

| I feel this way when Feds get an extra day of vacation for no good reason, for example dec 26. Feds get so much vacation time already, can't u just use leave like the rest if us? How much does THAT cost tax payers? |

How does it send a message of "why bother to show up on a snow day?" I had over half of my staff late that day because they wer trying desperately to get to school despite crippling traffic and hazardous conditions. They were calling and texting me to make sure there was coverage for their class. Two teachers parked their cars in a neighborhood where they don't live and walked over a mile to get to school. One teacher called me in tears because she had just been rear-ended and was still trying to make it. I told her to go back home.
Just stop OP. Signed--an FCPS principal |
It's true, but it is admin leave not a "free" personal day. For the teachers who made it in, if they want to take time off for training or something like that this year, it will be approved and the sub paid for. As for the teachers who will take advantage next time, I highly doubt that would happen. Give teachers (myself included) a little more credit! This was a situation that will probably never happen again, and everyone I know was busting their butts to get into school on time. I ended up being only 20 minutes late at my school and another teacher thankfully took my class, but if this happened again, I would not just stay home to take advantage. I have ample sick leave to take if I really wanted to do that. |

This happens everywhere from time to time, even "up north" where they can better deal with the snow. I remember in elementary school a million years ago a situation a lot like this one where teachers (especially those driving from further away) just couldn't make it to school. Other teachers took the classes, or we had indoor recess, or watched a video. Shit happens, let it go OP.
At my private industry job, they let people use liberal leave after the fact, and people who showed up late due to traffic got admin time for their lateness so they didn't have to make up the time or use leave. It only seems fair. And I say that as a telecommute-able employee who still worked a full day, half from home until the roads cleared up, but I'm not mad that many of my CW's technically only worked 5 or 6 hours or whatever. |
+100 or perhaps you can quit your job and become a teacher for the high pay and great benefits -- not to mention constant support from the community. People on here ragging on teachers and FCPS need to get over themselves. |

I'm all for it. Many teachers in our area of Fairfax can't afford to live nearby and already have to drive long commutes in great weather conditions. DD's English teacher had to abandon his car and walk the final mile to school. Of course, they should not be docked because FCPS made the wrong decision. There were plenty of teachers stuck on the Beltway for hours.
Now today's decision to close schools is ridiculous. |
| Waah, waah, waah! Hers is bigger than mine and it's totally not fair!! Waah, waah, waah! She always get what she wants. It's not fair. STOMP STOPM STOMPing off now. |

We should make this a sticky at the top of this forum. |
| I have zero dog in this fight, but it is really clear that OP is a selfish moron. Hopefully she has never been in management. |
Do you engage in such nasty, petty scorekeeping in other facets of your life? That must be exhausting. Are you a negative and disagreeable person in general? |
