I heard from a teacher friend that any teacher who did not show up on Tuesday was not docked because they were not able to drive in the snow/conditions; likewise, any teacher who DID show up, gets a "free" day in their pot (not sure if it would be PTO or how that would work). While I can't guarantee this is 100% true, if it is, I find it very disconcerting. Not only does it send what I believe is a poor message to staff (i.e. why bother trying to show up on a snow day?); it is a huge financial burden on the district, read, all who pay taxes here! Has anyone heard about this? Thoughts?
It's true, but it is admin leave not a "free" personal day. For the teachers who made it in, if they want to take time off for training or something like that this year, it will be approved and the sub paid for. As for the teachers who will take advantage next time, I highly doubt that would happen. Give teachers (myself included) a little more credit! This was a situation that will probably never happen again, and everyone I know was busting their butts to get into school on time. I ended up being only 20 minutes late at my school and another teacher thankfully took my class, but if this happened again, I would not just stay home to take advantage. I have ample sick leave to take if I really wanted to do that.
