DC Public and Public Charter Schools
| All those low income kids in walking distance got breakfast! All the kids with a short commute got a full school day! My kid's teacher made it from silver spring only 5 minutes late. Think of other people before you wish for a delay. If YOUR commute or roads are bad, make your own school delay and bring your kids in 2 hours late. |
let me guess you trying to troll both OOB and FARMS, FAIL! |
? OP here. No I am just surprised at the clamoring for a delay. A delay would have been a mild headache for us but a major problem for families/kids in more precarious economic situations. Delaying or closing seems best reserved for extreme situations, like when busses can't run or something. Especially in DCPS which serves a fragile population. You want a 4 year old left at home with mom's (maybe ok, maybe violent) boyfriend because she has to work and her child's school, which she can walk to, is on a two hour delay?! All so you don't have to feel guilty for bringing your kid in late. Just bring your kid in late! |

No matter what the call was, people would have been upset.
I agree. If you can't get your kids to school on time, bring them in later. For people who live within walking distance, it was fine (my kids liked it). Plus I could leave at a decent hour to get to my work in Virginia that was not canceled / delayed. ..........One of those days where I am happy that we have stuck with our IB school and not driving, using metro or using private buses/ shuttles. |
|
I also think it was the right call to not delay, especially given that the decision has to be made so early in advance. From what I saw, driving at 9:30 would have been worse than at 7:30.
Seems like the city did a worse job than usual on treating/clearing the roads, which will probably factor into future decision-making. |
| Just wish they hadn't woken me up with that 4 a.m. text. |
| School did not need to be delayed - streets needed to be treated. |
I'm glad they didn't delay as well - we walked. No late slips being handed out at our school this morning
|
LOL! Most of those low income kids skipped school today! |
Well our local bus is not running now. Again, most of the kids from the public housing were not on the bus this morning when it was running. No I do not want a kid left with a violent boyfriend. I want adults to make better choices in their lives. Perhaps the schools could have a program for babysitting for parents who feel like they really need it and cancel school for all the rest.

| All the low-income kids skipped school and hung out with their SES friends houses for punchbowl drug party. |

Sigh, here's the problem. Keeping the schools open is best, I think we all agree, but only a) if the streets are properly treated, and b) if the vast majority of kids attend a neighborhood school. Since we know that 43 percent of public school kids attend charters in addition to who knows how many kids attend an OOB DCPS, most kids DON'T attend a neighborhood school. And when major thoroughfares are closed, cars are piling up, and school buses can't get up hills, it's a problem.
Did they have enough information in time to make a better call? It might have been good to err on the side of caution since the Boswer administration is completely new and there was a good chance the snow response would be insufficient. A two-hour delay might have kept enough people off the streets to allow the snowplows to come through. |
Why is the boyfriend just sitting around the house all day? He should get a job! And, if he's violent, what the hell is she doing hooking up with him and keeping him around in the first place? If you don't think you can trust your boyfriend around your kid, that's a boyfriend that needs to be gotten rid of. And, right now, guess what - most of the WMATA buses AREN'T running - and the ones that are, are far and few between running on a very limited schedule. |
A good place to set up babysitting would be a the various district police stations, which are safe and open. |
Looks like the buses got Bowsered, too. |
