Family came over carrying the gut bug, we were all sick last night. Now DS (3 weeks) is running a low grade fever (100.9) and has vomited twice. No desire to eat, super lethargic.
This is an immediate trip to the ER, right? I've never heard of a newborn getting the stomach virus and thought he'd be immune. |
| Call your pediatrician. They'll tell you whether to head to the ER or wait. You certainly don't want to take him to the ER if not absolutely necessary with all the flu and other germs going around. |
| I'm not a doctor, but my understanding is yes for a baby that young. Pretty certain that's what my pediatrician said when my DD was that young. Good luck! |
|
If you go to the ER - go to a hospital that has pediatric ER.
If I was in DC, I would go to Childrens as opposed to Sibley. Georgetown would be another choice. |
| Yup. ER and be ready for a spinal tap =[ so sorry! |
Why??? We KNOW it's the virus, it's gone through our whole family. Can we refuse it? |
| I wouldn't. The virus can lower his immune response making him susceptible to infections. |
| ER |
| Pleas tell me you're at the ER. Infections can spread into the brain rapidly in infants- their blood brain barriers are not well developed. |
She is nursing now, and her fever isn't rising. |
| OMG!!!! |
I would try to refuse spinal as best you can seeing as you know what it is, tho they'll prob try to do it.
Report back and let us know what happened? I'm sorry, I'd be beside myself

Oh my god, please, please go to the ER. I recently had a three week infant with a similar fever and what was a benign infection (not a stomach flu) in other family members developed very quickly into something more serious in the baby. Like life threatening. They do not have the immune system to fight off an infection at this point and it can manifest itself differently, and spread to the blood, the brain. I am not trying to scare you for no reason, but I was told many times that I saved my child's life by bringing her in without delay. You must have someone look at an infant that young with a fever of 100.4 and above.
Yes, the standard of care for a baby that small with a fever is a spinal tap, blood culture and urine culture, which will be unpleasant. They will probably admit the baby for 48 hours until the cultures clear. You can try to refuse things but I would not wait it out without talking to a doctor. Please talk to someone ASAP. |
| Please take your baby to the ER |

ER ASAP
Wow, your family sure knows what a couple with a 3-week old needed for Christmas. SMH. |
