South Beach/Miami - where to eat, what to do

Anonymous
Going to Miami for just a couple of days this weekend. We are staying in South Beach area and will not have any children with us (!). Two questions:

1) Any suggestions on *good* restaurants (not too touristy, not too divey, kind of on the foodie side) and/or authentic Cuban restaurants? There were some suggestions posted a little while ago on this board for Cuban places(Versailles, Havana Harry's, Puerto Sagua, Yuca) but want to see if anyone else had any suggestions. Willing to leave South Beach for the right spot (Cuban or not Cuban).
2) We won't have a ton of time, but anything we must see/do while we're there?

Thanks very much!

Makoto in bal harbour is worth a trip. Michaels in design district. South beach is pretty heavy on tourist traps. Setai had a nice resauarnt.

I second michaels, as well as Yard bird.

Instead of Cuban -- celebrate the new Miami ethnic with Russian. Cuban places are tired now.

Best (for food) is Chaynaya Oasis in Sunny Isles.

Love Puerto Sagua did not like Versailles. Stripsteak at Fountainbleau was great albeit pricey. There is quite the scene at the Fountainbleau at night. Great for people watching. Took an art deco walk that starts from the beach and goes into various hotels, that was interesting. Also really liked Villa Vizcaya - nice gardens.

Prime 112 is kind of like Cafe Milano with slightly better good. Sugarcane is a joke -- I would not go there.

Michael's yes for sure.

Pub Belly is good if you want to leave hungrier than when you arrived.

In Miami Beach, I like Siena Tavern, Lure Fishbar, Scarpetta, and Tongue and Cheek. Michael's is not on the beach. It's popular but not my favorite. Job's Stone Crab is classic and worth a visit.

We liked Yard Bird and a Asian place called Khong River House. There is a Cuban chain restaurant called Havana 1957 -- we liked it very much for solid Cuban staples, but realize that not everyone likes formulaic places. There is also Joe's Stone Crab, Nobu, and a Jose Andres outpost. All really good.

Joe's Stone Crab is a heavily overpriced classic. Because stone crab is actually not that good, most regulars favor the alaskan legs.....

KHong River House is an upscale pf chang.

The reality is that South Beach restaurant business is 85% tourist driven, and quality falls accordingly. If you want to really eat well, you sort of need to get off the beach.

MAKOTO in bal harbour, Michaels (design district), Mandolin (design district) are great places.

If you must eat in such beach, then Hakkasan in the Fountainbleu is nice (I know, north of south beach proper), The Setai restaurant, Juvia (In the magnificent parking garage on lincoln road), and Baoili (elevated eurotrash to a level never seen at cafe milano).

How do you get to Little Havana from South Beach without a car?
