Meanwhile, Trump nominated, and the Senate confirmed, a commander who wore a MAGA hat and sucks up to Trump while on duty.

"Rare earths" are not that rare. The mining process is incredibly dirty and destructive, so China has basically cornered the market on the mines because they are willing to sacrifice their non-arable lands (of which China has a lot).

We could easily mine rare earths in the US and Canada, but we'd spoil a lot of incredible wildernesses.

Basically, they want Greenland to (1) control Artic shipping lanes and (2) dirty mining for rare earths in order to avoid doing it here.

Trump has fired several well-respected military leaders for trying to add sanity to his administration's crazy talk and for sounding the alarm bells when his administration has been breaking laws on national security. Elections have consequences.
