DC TAG Example Please

Anonymous
Trying to have a basic understanding. If In State Tuition is 12k and Out of State is 20K, do you then just end up paying 12k since the difference is less than the DC TAG amount of 10k?

OP here. So I guess the answer to my question is that I would pay the In State Tuition rate. Thanks for the link to the thread. I did a search yesterday and didn't see that thread.

No, you do not pay the in-state rate. You pay the OOS rate, and DC Tag provides 10k towards it. But that program is FIFO as it is a limited source each year.

It's knocks off 10k from the OOS tuition only.

Right, but with my example, with the in-state and OOS being less than 10k difference, that means I pay the in-state rate, right??

No. Using your example, DC Tag will pay 10k of the 20k, and you pay the remainder. Your remaining balance would be 10k. 20k less 10k equals 10k.

HUH??? I'm confused. There would be an extra 2k, right? I thought the DC TAG was only to try and make up the difference between the costs. If the difference is only 8k, why would they give me 10k? Oh geez, I must be stupid or something because I don't get it. DD is going to be in trouble with this financial aid stuff. I'm going to need to stay in the college counselors office.

Think of it as $5K per semester. However, if the OOS tuition is less than that then you would only get the amount needed to cover the tuition amount. The money can be used only for tuition - not for room and board or expenses. So, if the tuition comes to $8K then you will only get $4K per semester. Go to the DC TAG website and confirm all of this - link is below. It will answer your questions.
