Wordmasters

Does your school do Wordmasters? If so, what does the teacher do to prepare your child (inc. homework assignments)? Thanks

The kids have to write several definitions for each word and write a sentence using the word. They have a spelling test and vocab test on about 1/2 of the words one week and the other half a week or two later. They had a couple of homework-sheets that involved the word analysis process (not using the actual WM words -- using other words, perhaps previous WM analogies?).

That's all. Most of the process seems to involve the homework of writing the definitions and sentences (which can take an extraordinarily long time for some kids).

Ours did nothing this year expect hand out the words and then did some sample word analogies that did not relate to the words. It was up to the kids to either put time in or not.

Did you get any analogy homework or was it done at school? How far in advance before the test did your child do the analogy work?

Same with us. This is an an AAP McLean school.

I'm looking at my kid's folder to get a timeline. These all happened in about a 2-3 week timespan.

3 weeks ago: They were given 25 words for their assignment. The packet instructions were: Give definition of each word, determine part of speech, give an antonym and a synonym, give an original sentence that what the word's meaning is, and then provide a drawing. Teacher provided feedback on the assignment.

They were given 2 challenge practice sheets at school that had 25 fill in the blank type questions.

They were given a study sheet that had all 25 words and additional definitions. Each word had between 2-6 definitions by context.

Early last week- They were given an analogies practice test that had none of the original words.

Late last week- They were given an analogies test on their original 25 words.

That sounds somewhat similar to what I do.

Why is this posted in the AAP forum? My Gen Ed child was the top scorer in our center school's Wordmasters competition last year. It's for all students.

There are different word lists for G/T kids and non-G/T kids. I've never seen it in our non-aap school. We do have it at the aap center. Maybe it is not standard to have it at fcps non-aap programs.

What grade levels?

My DC competed along with all the other kids, both AAP and non-AAP. The word lists were the same for everyone. Maybe different schools do it different ways, but that was our experience.

There is a gold list and a blue list. Blue list is "grade level;" gold list is g/t.

This isn't how it worked in our school. My non-AAP child won top honors - surpassing AAP and non-AAP kids - in Wordmasters and was honored as such at the 6th grade graduation ceremony.

I'm not saying that any or every aap school uses both the blue list AND the gold list for different groups. I'm just telling you that there are two different lists for each grade that are offered by the WM program. I do not know which list your school used. Sounds like you don't either. If you remember some of the words, I can tell you which list it is. If they are offering it to the whole school, they might be using the blue list.
