Thinking about a king-size bed

Anonymous
We are thinking about moving from a queen to a king-size bed. I have several questions:

1. DH does a lot of moving around/tossing and turning at night. Could we buy two XL twin mattresses rather than a king, given that the measurements work out to be the same? I would love to be on a different surface, yet sleep together.

2. If we buy a platform-type bed (from e.g. World Market), and use two twins, then do we need a box spring? And if we do need a box spring, then would we buy a king box spring for the two twins?

3. Where do people shop for mattresses nowadays? Is casper.com a good source? Costco?

4. Is there someplace like DCUM where people congregate to talk about mattresses?

Thanks!

We have a memory foam mattress and you can't feel the other person tossing and turning at all.

My parents have a king that is two separate types of mattress, but still in one piece. My mom's side is memory foam and my dad's side is something harder. I am pretty sure it was expensive, but know that this is an option. I personally can't stand the divot in the middle of the bed in a two-twin option, but if you guys really sleep very separately, it might work.

That line down the middle will be very annoying!

1. If you spend more, you can get a mattress that doesn't transfer motion. We have a Serta I Series that is great for this and had a Stearns and Foster before. Mattresses with this feature are around twice as much as those without-plan on spending around $2k or more.

2. You do not need a box spring for a platform bed. King box springs are typically split, so two XL twins anyhow, otherwise you'll never get them into your bedroom.

3. Go to a mattress store so you can test them out. They all price match, so find the store you like best and the price you like best and tell them how much you want to pay. I know some say Costco has good prices, but I've never seen the beds set up there, so not sure how you test them out.

4. I don't know this one.

5. Not that you asked, but switching to King is magical. We upgraded not too long ago and I LOVE it.

We have a memory foam mattress, and while that is true, I hate it for other reasons. It runs hot, and I always wake up with a sore back.

We have a latex mattress and you can't feel the person on the other side, and it does not run hot. It comes in six pieces and you can customize the firmness for each piece. We got it at Savvy Rest in Vienna. Pricey, but worth it, and it will last years.

I wouldn't get latex because I never had latex reactions yet had a huge one at the dentist. Get 2 twins that are the same height and the exact same box spring for each side. Use a king frame and cover the whole thing with a memory foam topper. Macy's has great sales on mattresses.

We have a memory foam mattress but everyone that tried it prefers a good mattress with a topper.

King-size Select Comfort beds have two different air pockets inside, so you can't feel the other person moving around. I love ours.
