Any places I can rent a pet?

Anonymous
I have 3yo and 5yo boys and they are begging me for a pet. I do not want to commit to taking care of this pet forever. However, I would love to rent a pet for a few weeks.

Does this type of service exist?

You could "rent" mine for free!

Not really, because I don't know you, and he's old and having trouble with incontinence so probably not what you have in mind, but I know when he was younger I would have been happy to lend him to someone I knew. He's a great dog, but he's a lot of work, and if I hit a busy spell at work or go on vacation he'd love to be doted on by someone else's little boys for a change.

What about fostering kittens in the spring?

OP here. I should add that one of kids is allergic to dogs and I am allergic to cats. I would like a smaller animal - turtle, lizard, etc.

This is in the East Bay near Oakland CA. I think it's the only place like it in the COUNTRY. Whenever we visit my family there, I always go rent a mouse or hamster for my kids. It's great fun!

It's a method for fund raising for this wildlife rescue operation located in a gorgeous little park. It's a great idea but I have not seen the likes of it anywhere else.... good luck! Perhaps your kids could share a pet with someone who lives nearby.

I vaguely remember hearing last year that a farm let you borrow chicks for like 2 weeks.

Friends recently rented 2 chickens for a month through this company:

Rent a coop

They had fun although they were ready to give them back by the end!

You can't have chickens in Fairfax County unless you have an acre of land. Make sure to look up the rules before getting chickens.

In the country, my parents rented goats for a week to eat up the poison ivy (apparently they love the stuff).

There used to be a couple of moms who ran a pet rental service in NOVA but they stopped doing it a few months ago.
