Offer to care for the neighbors' small pets when they go out of town - post on your neighborhood listserv offering your help.

Do wildlife/reptile rescue orgs need foster homes? I'd think though you'd need to be experienced, but you might try those.

We just got a lizard, one if the "beginner" ones, and it's actually a lot of work and money with all the heaters, temperature regulation, live food, etc.
