Periods started early - severe cough

Anonymous
Hi,
I am 37, diagnosed with Flu on Mondaywith high fever. Cough is so worse. On Thursday(yes went to emergency on thanksgiving evening),chest x-ray showed early stages of pneumonia. On antibiotic now. Still severe cough but fever free now. But today I noticed I started periods again. It is 15th day of my cycle. I started wearing a sanitary pad while sleeping as I was leaking urine while coughing.
Today morning I noticed bright red/pink on it. So, not sure whether to run to doctor again or is it common to get early period with severe cough?

I doubt the two are related. It's nothing I'D run to the Dr for, but maybe I'm in the minority.

When your body is under a lot of stress, it can throw your cycle off. If you're very worried, put in a call to the doc, but I don't think a visit is necessary.

Drop in estrogen at that time can cause some minor bleeding (ovulatory). Coughing severely can definitely exacerbate that.

Some women get breakthrough bleeding around day 14/15 every month and it's normal for them. Doc would not blink an eye at that time of month, and would only check it out if it was continuous. Trust me, they would shrug and say "see if it continues for more than three months".

It's most likely a fluke caused by any number of things. I had it once and the doc said they wait until it happens twice before they consider looking into it since it happens so, so often.

This happened to me last month. I had a severe cough that turned out to be strep, was planning a birthday party for my kid, and was trying to turn in a bunch of stuff at work etc. I had one cycle start two weeks after the previous one. The next cycle was normal, and I have a history of early cycles during stressful times.

I don't know the reason(s) why this occurs, but I had a really bad case of pneumonia a few years back, with a terrible terrible cough then I got my period when I had just finished it 2 weeks prior.

I was in the E/R for the pneumonia and told the Dr. about getting my period again and he told me not to worry about it so I didn't.

I guess it is just something that happens when the body gets sick. I wouldn't see a Dr. for it.

Don’t take my advice too seriously and it might be serious but by coughing, it causes sudden tension in muscle surrounding your uterus, possibly stimulating your period or possibly damaging the uterus

This thread is five years old.

Doesnt matter how old the thread is. It was useful for me now... I also have the flu and started my period last night. I'm only in my second week of cycle.

I was having continuous but light bleeding for three months. I had my IUD removed and put on birth control pills. This is my first month starting them. My bleeding is extremely heavy so it caused some concern. I'm wondering if its possible it's from the coughing.

I have been coughing for a week from a cold. And now I have bleeding and cramps. Ugh. I'm on the pill though. So it’s weird

Covid shots and Covid always messed up my cycle. I was in menopause, finally got Covid in May, and got a period right after. Doctor checked me out, no other issues, but it definitely messes with your hormones.

This is such a good thread, I have been stressing my head off, until I read your stories.
Five days ago I started to have shivers, high fever and cough and been told by the doctor it’s a nasty virus, but not Covid. My period stopped a week and a half ago and today it restarted and it’s quite heavy as well. I’m coughing like an idiot still, so I was wondering the same if it would cause stress on my uterus, as I’m struggling with the coughs. But also been thinking about what if it’s the worst…so came online, and reading that you all had similar stories made me feel a bit more at ease with this. Can somebody tell how your stories stopped? Was the condition stopped after the flu was gone?

I just had the loop procedure the 17th of last month. I ended up getting pneumonia with severe coughing ( coughing so much that i can't control my bladder) 3 weeks later. Shortly after getting pneumonia my period started. Which was about a week early.

Literally just got over covid - 1-2 weeks in bed awful cough and still got the cough although feeling much better. Period has started a week early so reading these messages has been comforting. Pretty certain when I had Covid last time (along time ago!) my period came early and was really light.
