MY DS is going on 9 yrs old and wants to watch more variety in TV shows. Unfortunately, he seems to be choosing a lot of garbage that his dad and I don't think are appropriate. He wants to binge watch DisneyXD shows (Kickin' It, Jessie, Suite Life), cartoons like "Adventure Time", things that just seem stupid and not great influences on him. He's also picked up a lot of smartass talk and behaviors and we don't want TV to be reinforcing this nonsense.
Still, I know he's growing up and want to respect that he's not going to want to watch "baby shows" anymore. What does your kid like at this age that you feel you can tolerate? |
| My 9yo and 6yo watch Modern Family, The Middle and now Blackish. Maybe not age-appropriate, but at least not inane. I can't watch that Disney/Cartoon Network junk. |
|
My boys (7 and 9) were really into Chopped a few months ago although now they don't watch too much anymore. They also like The Amazing Race.
I do let them watch Cartoon Network, but not Adventure Time. They watch Uncle Grandpa, Steven Universe, and Clarence. Silly shows, but not mean and crass. |
| My dd is almost 9, and she watches Jesse, Dog with a Blog, Wild Kratts, Popular Mechanics for Kids, I Didn't Do it, and Austin and Ally. |
|
Bear Grylls "Man vs. Wild"--get the DVDs. AWESOME. My two athletic DDs love it.
A quick google search will tell you which season is best (I think it's season 4) but they are all good. And btw he's cute and fun to watch. They were watching two days ago, and I don't really watch much tv, but I couldn't help but sit myself down to watch him spear a salmon with a cut sapling he made into a spear. |
| oh, and you will find a lot of help by looking at commonsensemedia.org |
| Wean off the TV now. |
| Wild Kratts, Amazing Race (we watch as a family), Star Wars Rebels, Animal Planet shows, reality nature/survival shows like Life Below Zero |
| We watch a lot of PBS. My son loves some of the old shows on Cosi TV, plus we keep an eye out for some movie classics. You can get really sucked into Cartoon Network, Disney Channel and Nickelodeon as the default for kids and never really look at other program options. It requires some research if you want to propose alternatives to Disney. |

| American Ninja Warrior - it's not on right now, but a huge hit in our house |
| My son likes Ben 10, Haunted Hathaways, Henry Danger, and some Amazing Gumball show. Can't remember the name. |
| My boys are 10 and 7. They like NOVA, Fetch with Ruff Ruffman, Eureka, and Star Trek (all the versions). We don't have cable, so they watch it all on Amazon Prime. |

The middle
Master Chef JR Shark Tank Phineas and Ferb Brain Games Undercover Boss |
| No cable, so my nine year old watches Arthur, Wild Kratts, and right now Masterchef Jr. He liked American Ninja Warrior when it was on. Sometimes he watches a little bit of Modern Family if it is on, but he usually walks away from it. |
