Renaming F.W. Ballou High School to Marion Barry, Jr., Senior High School

A petition has begun to circulate to have this done in time for the grand-opening of the new school.

And...? Your point is?

Can we talk about who all is going to be sending their kids to Ballou? I really do hope this beautiful new building is going to attract some of the neighborhood kids back. I just feel like a good chunk of Ward 8 sends their child elsewhere for school. I don't mean to be negative; I really do want to see Ballou succeed. It's our neighborhood school still many years away, but I can't see myself sending my baby there yet.

So you want other people to send their babies first, GOT IT!!

The school is changing as in similar to how Wilson High School did so over the years. We all remember what cesspool that school was before their intervention. So there's hope.

The point is, I am gueesing is a well-intended good notion.

PP here. I can't send my baby there yet, because he's too young. Not even in school yet. Lol. So, yes, other people are and will be sending their kids there first. I am just saying it's a shame people don't see Ballou as a good option. As a ward, we will keep crossing the river for amenities, jobs and education until we establish good options on this side of the river. Maybe the new Ballou will help with this.

Ballou is a storied name in the city and the school aims to live up to that reputation. Why sully it by renaming it after a crooked racist buffoon?
Anonymous
Why should Ballou be renamed? It has a name already. Wouldn't it make more sense to name one of Muriel's new "Deal for All!" schools after Barry?

Don't rename Ballou for Mayor-for-Life Barry. Rename Wilson instead. What delicious irony. It might also open up a few spots at the school.

From my reading, Dr. Frank W. Ballou was a pretty hardcore segregationist. Losing that name would be no shame, but Barry ought to be honored in a way that touches the city as a whole, not just one far-off corner.

At least half the city says that they don't want to be "touched," by anything named for Marion Barry, thanks very much.

Keep the Ballou name but honor the Disney character instead!

The Blue Plains treatment plant is available for naming!

Are we able to start bashing Barry because I think this is an awful idea. Corrupt politicians shouldn't get their names on buildings.

If that were the case, no building would ever be named for a politician.
