Renaming F.W. Ballou High School to Marion Barry, Jr., Senior High School

If that were the case, no building would ever be named for a politician.

Barry put his own name on the Reeves Center, third world strongman-for-life style. DC removed it when Barry went to the slammer and then he ordered it restored once he became mayor again.

Ha! At least one high school was named already for the ex-mayor-for-life, the fictional Marion Barry High School in the film "High School High" -- complete with a statute holding a crack pipe. Does DC really want to re-kindle its old national laughingstock status?!

That's awesome. Frankly, if we have to name anything after him, it should be a wing of the Vista Motel. Statue with crack pipe is a MUST HAVE.

I think the owners of the four-star Westin City Center that replaced the Vista would not be pleased.

If they named a junior high after Buddy Cianci they can name a high school after Marion Barry

Except that Buddy is just a joke in Rhode Island. Barry was a national joke who for years made DC a laughingstock.

Crack High.

No opinion on the renaming, but if it happens I vote for calling it "Junior Senior" as a nickname.

Its pretty clear who is posting regarding their views of Marion Barry- likely non-native Washingtonians, nor those with any long-standing connection to the city. Regardless of what you think of him, reducing him to one foolish act, that he regretted openly, is unfair. Lets hope you never walk down a path that leads you to a mistake you can never outlive in the minds of some.

That being said, I don't think a school needs to be renamed for him. There are other things that will be built that can honor him, if it is decided to so.

This. He had his good and bad sides, but naming a high school after a mayor who was arrested for smoking crack would subject DC to new levels of ridicule.

I've lived here long enough to remember when he was mayor and it was a lot more than "one foolish act." Even putting aside the "personal" issues for a moment -- the repeated visits to sex and drug clubs while mayor, the statements of girlfriends and associates that they had provided him crack and coke -- there was the widespread DC government corruption and the fact that DC reached a complete state of dysfunction while he was in office. Remember how the control board finally had to step in and save the city? And his years on the council have not been grand either -- the repeated tax evasion, the corrupt contracts, censure by the council, stalking and other complaints about his behavior, the racist rants that would have gotten any other politician (certainly a white one) hounded out of office. Barry had charm and may have had some good points, but DC shoukd avoid honoring and naming anything after this scoundrel.

I wish you all would go back to your respective racist states with your over the top generalizations. You people sound like the ones Barry dissed in Plantation DC when Barry took office. It is clear from the DCUM threads that you are in a race to bring it back.
