Paradise (Masterpiece Classic)

So I've recorded the episodes but blew it and the DVR only kept the last five. I've got a couple more to watch, but I'm curious about how things came to be, and some of the power dynamics--so at times I can't tell when someone is being sincere or BSing the other one. Sorry I don't know the names…

There's the blond man (head of the store), his brunette wife, then the brown-haired former owner of the store, and his blonde fiancé.

Do blond man and brunette wife love each other? Is she pretending to like brown-haired guy or is that real?

Do brown haired guy and his fiancé love each other?

What is the former relationship between brown-haired guy and brunette wife? Were they married, engaged, dating, or what, and what happened that they broke up?

How did blond man get the store? I suspect the store was passed on to whomever brunette wife married, and maybe she was to marry brain-haired guy but didn't, so that's why he thinks the store "should be his"?

Who is the similar-aged guy who periodically talks to brown-haired guy--it that his brother or something?

TIA!

I can answer some of your questions, but I did miss a big chunk of episodes....

Brunette woman and brown haired guy were once engaged. She was head over heels in love, but he wasn't really feeling it. He fell for the blonde, who was a relatively new shopgirl at The Paradise at the time. He was her boss. On the eve of the wedding he called things off to be with blondie, but blondie and brown haired guy couldn't be open with their relationship because she didn't want to lose her job. Brunette was PISSED over this turn of events.

Like I said I missed some episodes, but I seem to recall that brunette's wealthy father lent brown haired man a substantial sum to keep The Paradise afloat (to expand, perhaps), it wasn't repaid, and when her father died the brunette and/or her new blond husband gained ownership. The husband seems to hold the cards now. I admittedly lack some details here- maybe the blond husband gained ownership some way I missed.

The brown haired guy tried to remain on on the brunette's good side, but she harbors a major boner for him so he essentially cut ties with her. In the meantime blondie found out that he and the brunette had kissed (it was a one-sided kiss, but she doesn't accept that), and blondie essentially dumped him but it's all pretty murky. Magic 8 Ball says they will get back together.

I'm not sure which other brown haired guy you mean. There is one, sort of baby faced, who was a lowly shop boy at first but knows a lot about the workings of The Paradise.

OP here, thank you, PP!

So, sounds like brown-haired guy isn't as sinister as he appears. Sounds like he owned the shop, was to marry brunette, brunette's father lent him money, he bailed on the marriage, loan not repaid so brunette and new blond husband get the store out from under him.

OK there is no way I could have been able to reconstruct that without you, PP!

Does brunette love her blond husband or was he (an incredible, Nordic-god-like) rebound?

There was a scene where she tells brown-haired guy that her husband is really mean. Is that true or BS?

Does she still love brown-haired guy?

Thanks!

Both seasons are available on Netflix. I love this show!

Another detail I forgot; in the first season part of the problem in the relationship between the brown haired guy and the brunette was that he was still hung up on his first wife, who died in a mysterious accident, I think after ground was broken for The Paradise- she fell in a hole or something. He kept a portrait of her in his office and the brunette really didn't like that.

The brown haired guy is generally an upstanding dude who is passionate about The Paradise. His involvement with the store at this point is up to the blond guy.

The marriage between the Nordic god and the brunette was a rebound and not really a love match, but she tried to make it work. She tried to take his daughter as her own but he has been thwarting that relationship and the daughter is suffering. He indicated in the last episode that he is really bitter over her lingering feelings for Moray (brown haired guy) and he is making the brunette pay. The blond guy is a huge tool, basically.

Thank you, PP. One more thing--the old "servant"-type guy, who seems to be working everyone--I can't figure out--who is he loyal to, or if to no one, what does he want?

The last episode I watched, he seemed to be a friend to the brunette, who he saw by the pond. But he seemed to be also scheming with Moray (brown-haired guy).
TIA!

Not the PP but the old guy is Jonas and he was loyal to Moray because his first wife gave him a job.

I watched the 1st season of the show earlier this year. I generally liked it but was also kind of disappointed. I've heard that the 2nd season isn't great. Is it still worth watching?

I don't know. I binge watched the first season and was looking forward to the second, but for me it's been hard to get back in the swing of it. There was some good mystery, tension and romance in the first season that I have not seen after two episodes of the second. I will probably keep watching but something's got to happen soon to maintain my interest.
