| My daughter is in 2nd grade at a BCC elementary school. She got her report card. Happy that it was all Ps. Her reading has improved a lot since school year started. She is tackling much harder words and sounding them out so that is getting better. yeah. Just curious, what other second grader reading levels are. Her teacher said she's right at the county benchmark. I love reading and would love for her to be a very strong reader. I am thrilled that she reads better out loud to me. |
| It should say what the benchmarks are on the report card. |
| It does say. I am just curious what other 2nd graders are doing and whether she's really doing okay. I know that Montgomery County is huge and there's a whole range of schools and reading levels. |

The report card clearly indicates the target for the grade and marking period. The target is based on research and observation. What are you asking?
Some kids are going to be above, and some kids are going to be below. But the target is right there plain as can be. |
You will get a wide range of answers on 2nd grade reading level. You will get a better idea of how DC is doing by asking the teacher which reading group DC is in and what level work the top groups are doing. |
| OP, stop humblebragging. You stink. |
| At my school being on grade level is the lowest group. |
| Is it bragging to be at the county benchmark? Isn't that average? |
|
That is what I'm trying to figure out. There are a lot of rude people who really don't need to answer. Her teacher said there are 4 groups and that sh is in one of the two middle groups. Everyone seems to brag about having kids who are fabulous readers who all read before kindergarten. It says the benchmark. We're at it. I was just trying to gauge what her peers are out. I'm not worried. It probably was a mistake to try to post something on this forum.

| My 2nd grade DS is reading at "N" level. It is somewhere in the 3rd grade range. It seems to me like a lot of his peers are reading at about that level. They are currently reading Harry Potter for joy reading but we have to prod him to think about the themes, etc. because his reading ability exceeds his comprehension. |
| My second grade DD is ready at the level expected in second quarter of third grade, according to her report card. Based on my conversation with her teacher, I got the impression that much of her class is at this level. However, if she was reading at second grade level, I would think that was great too. |
| For my child being on grade level put him in the lowest reading group (Rockville school). Doesn't mean there is a problem and sounds like she is making progress which is great. |
| My DD in first grade and the report card had her at L/M. During reading another girl from a another class comes in and it's just the two of them in the group. |

Yes, it's common for ES kids to read above grade level in MoCo, but I think it might also depend on whether your school is in a green or red zone. Of course, you will have above grade readers in red zones, but it will be more common in green zones.

| What are red and green zones? |
