Has anyone here filed for unemployment?

How did it go? Were you able to get anything?

TIA

Yes, a few years ago. I qiut as boss threatened me for taking maternity leave. They were really nice and helpful.

I did. It made me sick but since I had paid into the system for years, why not get it if entitled?

I had to for a few weeks after a temp job ended and my start date at my new job was about a month away. It was nice to have some extra money to help cover the moving costs associated with my new job (I was fresh out of school without a ton of savings). The Virginia online system was fairly easy to use.

Yes. You collect unemployment from the state you worked in, not where you live. My old job had been in Maryland; it took the state officea few weeks to contact my former employer to verify salary & the fact that I'd worked there.

Your employer pays SUI. Employees do not pay.

Yes, 4 years ago in DC. The process was very streamlined and the checks came in on time. Fortunately I found a new job within 3 months.

Yes, DH got laid off in 2009 and unemployment kept us afloat until he got a new job 3 months later.

Why do you ask?

OP here. Thanks for the responses.
I ask because I looked at the website and the process looks complicated and I was just feeling it out to see if it will be worth it. We've got savings.
Glad to hear that someone here thought it was streamlined.

I have filed and collected unemployment- it seems like a lot but it's not- once you're in, it's rather regular and easy to keep (as long as you are looking/keep notes). I had a friend that thought it seemed like too much and never collected- that's crazy, your employer pays for it (and you indirectly) - it's your right. There are so many people playing this system that as a legit unemployed person I feel perfectly ok about collecting this when I was not working.

OP here. I did look at the criteria and I do legitimately qualify. I should do this. Been working full time since I was 17. Now age 43. This is the first day I've ever had of being unemployed.

Typical DC. I have in hand one letter saying I was approved and one letter saying I was denied. I have tried for days to talk to a real person with no success.

In MD I had not problem filing (2 different times.)
And I am typically a person who gets very overwhelmed by things like this.

NP, There are certain circumstances that you can still get unemployment even if you quit like if it's a hostile or dangerous environment. My Dh quit his job after a co worker attacked him and he was able to get unemployment.
