Non-puffy warm winter jacket for teen

Anonymous
I'm trying to convince my teen DD to buy a down or other warm jacket for winter. She generally wears fleece jackets, which I just don't think were warm enough when it was 10 degrees last winter.

Her objection? Down jackets are too puffy and bulky, and she thinks she looks too big in them. Not true, but some of her friends have avoided them for similar reasons.

Any suggestions for brands/styles to try?

I love this Columbia jacket:

Fits all together so you can wear just the fleece or the waterproof outer layer together.

How about a wool coat? I have one that is roomy enough to wear over a sweater, just line enough to cover my butt (it's amazing how big of a difference that makes for staying warm!), but is a streamlined cut that doesn't look at all bulky. I wear it constantly in the winter - it's not great for actual snow play like skiing or sledding, but is perfect for general running-around.

Try a pea coat

Another vote for wool coat. Check out the non-puffy coats in Lands End.

Wool pea coat. You can get them in stylish cuts and fun colors if she wants.

They have some really non-bulky down coats available now. Uniqlo (my precious Uniqlo) has tons - I wore one for most of the winter on its own; it is so thin you could easily double up on them, or slip one on under or over a fleece if it got too cold on its own.

She's not going to want a wool coat from Lands End. That's not a stylish teen option.

Eh, a wool (or fleece) peacoat is a wool peacoat.
Lands End has some cute coats in lots of different colors on sale right now:

Costco also had a bunch of non-bulky down coats the last time I went.

We get more rain in this area than Seattle. (Seriously, Google it if you don't believe me.)

Teens end up waiting far/walking from the bus stop, going to sporting events, etc. Get something waterproof, OP. I love a pea coat but it's not practical.

LOL, 10 degrees where we are from is still flip flop weather! When it hits ACTUAL temps of 30 below, then my teen would wear a jacket, no matter how it made her look! We buy nothing but Coluumbia

Where are you from that people routinely wear flip flops all day when it is 10 degrees Fahrenheit outside? I'd love to hear from others who are from that same area because that sounds like so much boasting to me. I get that people from colder climates are more acclimated, but 10 degrees is closed shoe weather no matter who you are.
