| Hi there-We are new to FCPS and just had our parent/teacher conference for our first grade DD. Conference was great and DD is being pulled out of the class into the advanced math group and has mastered the level of reading where the class needs to be by the end of the year. A neighbor said to us that if our kid has already been pulled out, they are being put into the pool to be considered for AAP in 3rd grade. Could someone please explain how this works? This is a sincere question and not a humblebrag. TIA. |

neighbor doesn't know what she's talking about. really.
The "pool" of automatic consideration for full time AAP is based on the scores on the NNAT (to be taken this spring) and the CogAt (taken in 2nd grade in the fall). Usually a child has to have at least a 132 on either test/subtest (which is roughly a 98th percentile based on national norms). If your child doensn't have those test scores, then you can parent refer the child. The pull outs really don't mean anything at all for AAP consideration other than the AART will have some interaction with your child which can be used to support a good rating on the GBRS. (See FCPS website if you don't know these acronyms.) |
| The above poster is correct. I'm curious though why you're even discussing it with a neighbor. Not trying to be mean, but this is the hype that gets everyone all up in arms. |
| Not a humblebrag?! That's exactly what this is. I'm guessing you are looking to feel better about yourself through your children. Laats of good luck with that! |

That's weird, I thought all the conferences were being scheduled for this coming monday and tuesday.
|
| If she is only reading at the end of first grade level (which is so low in Fairfax), then she is nothing special academically. Most K-ers in high SES neighborhoods can read at that level. |
Reading isn't highly correlated to intelligence. The fact that OP's child is pulled out for math is a better indication. |
Many teachers offer conferences in the week or two before fall break. I had one kid's conference yesterday. Other parents at the school had them last week. Others will have them next week. Sometimes the teachers want to travel for fall break, so they do them before and after school hours. |
Speaking of nothing special, thanks for adding a comment that does nothing to further the conversation and only exacerbates the impression that mothers are caddy and cruel when interacting with other mothers. |
Also, a lot of parents need to be at work during the day and there are only so many slots available before or after work on Monday and Tuesday. Scheduling them earlier is a big help to parents with busy schedules. |
I am not sure this is true. A lot of them maybe. But certainly not most. |
Caddy: small storage container, typically one with divisions. Catty: deliberately hurtful in one's remarks; spiteful. |
| I suspect if you're posting on the AAP board and you only have a first grader, you already know well what it takes to be in the pool of automatically considered applicants. |
The OP said she was new to FCPS. Cut her some slack. |
She may be new, but if she's on these boards, particularly the AAP one, and telling her neighbor about her kid's pull outs, I have to believe she knows. |
