DS on an essay prompt that asked, "Describe yourself in 500 words or less":
"I wonder if it would be acceptable just to send them lyrics to Mims-This is Why I'm Hot?" I couldn't decide if I should laugh or scold him. |

| Oh, gosh, please laugh. It's funny, and he deserves some empathy. Writing those essays can be so painful -- especially for kids who'd rather think and write about something other than themselves. You know, actually, this might make a good jumping-off spot for his essay. He's got a good sense of humor and sees the irony in asking kids to be honest and sincere in a situation where they're being ranked against thousands of others. For somebody who has grown up in a Facebook world that's all about packaging and self-promotion, I'd say that's pretty insightful. |

A few years ago, I think it was Pomona that asked for an essay describing something you saw on your street today. My mom (DC's grandmother) suggested two dogs copulating.

Hilarious . . . but all too true. Our DS's counselor emailed us another student's transcript and scores. When I pointed out the error, she replied, "OMG!!!!" |

I was an admissions staffer back in the day and this made me cringe. We were incredibly shallow and full of ourselves . . . way too many of us had been founders of a capella groups. |
