Did any of you see the petition to Obama to get the day after Christmas off for Federal Employees?
http://www.fedsmith.com/2014/10/22/do-you-want-the-day-after-christmas-off/ It's always irked me as a fed that we have SO many bs holiday (Columbus day, Presidents day, MLK day), but the two we don't get (Christmas Eve and Friday after Thanksgiving) are the ones that the majority of corporations give to their employees and they are the most family friendly holidays. I'm tired of being ragged for having days like Columbus off. I wish they would redo the federal holiday schedule or give floating holidays like so many corporations have. Anyone taking bets we won't get December 26th off?
|
| I work for a private company. We don't get Columbus Day, Presidents Day, day after Thanksgiving or after Christmas. Happy now? |
|
I would rather have off Christmas Eve than the 26th (Boxing Day!).
I like the idea of losing the Columbus Day holiday and getting Christmas Eve instead. Other than that, I think we're asking too much. I'm a fed, and I enjoy my paid holidays. I also earn paid time off, like every other fed, and I feel free to take it around the holidays. That's what it's for. |
| I think it is probably 50/50 odds. It could happen. I'd be happy because I would use one fewer day of leave. |
You are always free to go work on one of the companies that will accommodate you. |
Nah. You would End up using it when school is out of session for Presidents' Day. Mlk day, veterans ect |
People are never satisfied. Feds also get to carry over more leave than most companies. Use it.

Not Christian, don't care about days off at Christmas.
Now the day after Thanksgiving? It's total BS. I work at DOD - military gets a "training holiday" (they get 4 day weekends for most or our 3 day weekends where I work) - our office is closed the day after Thanksgiving so we have to take leave. shrug. |
Don't have any leave due to maternity leave. |
| I think these petitions make it less likely that we will have it off. They are embarrassing and should stop. |
| I'd be happy to give up Columbus Day or Veterans Day to gain the Friday after Thanksgiving. Not because I care about using a day of leave, but because every year two people have to be here to man the office. No one in my office is in an "essential"position so there is really no need for the office to be open. Nothing ever happens on that day. |
OP here. YES! This is my problem exactly. There's 2 of us in my office and we can't be off at the same time. So basically every other year I can't travel or leave for holidays, regardless of whether I have annual leave or not. This year I don't get to go away for Christmas or Thanksgiving on the off chance that someone from industry will call our office on December 26 or December 28... Doesn't make for a good holiday. |

While I agree with Columbus Day and President's Day, MLK is not a BS holiday. Remember those pesky anti-miscegenation laws an goverment sanctioned racial discrimination - maybe celebrating the end of that thanks to men like MLK is worth celebrating. No?
All that said when I was a kid in NYC we had both Washington's and Lincoln's birthday off. My mom was a SAHM so it was great. No rushing around for anyone except for dad! |
+1 to the bolded part. I think they don't really affect the WH decision, but they sure do make us look greedy/whiny. |
But you got to use that leave for what you wanted. Some employers do not give paid leave for the birth of a child. I agree some people are never satisfied. |
