Fed Holidays

Wish I could sympathize but I work for a company that DOES give the days after Thanksgiving and Christmas off, but does not give Columbus Day or Veterans Day off. Great, right? Except that forces us to find alternate care for our child since their daycare is also closed on those holidays but not the day after Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Grass isn't always greener.

Another non-sympathizer here. I always get the day after thanksgiving off, and this year we're getting Dec 24 - Jan 5th off. DH is a fed and gets the other random federal holidays that I don't (Columbus day, Veterans day, etc). Since all our family is out of state it works very well for us.

No sense thinking about it now. The decision almost always comes down to the wire. Not sure why--pr purposes, maybe? Put in for annual leave and if the extra holiday actually happens your leave will be restored.

OP here. I won't be able to spend time with my family (who isn't local) on Christmas unless we get the day off. I'm required to be at work and can't take annual leave.

I'm a fed contractor and most of the contractors have the option to trade Columbus/Veterans Days for Friday after Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve, so I do that. My wife, the fed, does not have that option. Instead, she watches the kids on Columbus and Veterans Day while I work and I watch the kids on the Friday after Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve while she works.

I'm a fed, and I feel like it's stuff like this that gives Feds a bad reputation.

Then find another job where you can take it off.

I think it's disgraceful that we don't get major holidays like Halloween, secretaries day (solidarity for my admin brothers and sisters), nfl kickoff Thursday, MLB opening day, st. Michael Jordan's birthday and victory in Japan day, which is still observed in Rhode Island (look it up). I would like to start a petition for a holiday to follow every holiday so we don't have to come to work hung over. Peace.

That's just common sense if you care about productivity.

To private sector employees--most of us feds are not whiners. I agree, use your leave. Too bad if you're stuck in the office. If this is so important, change jobs. There are plenty of people out there who will appreciate the opportunity to take your place.

To feds -- most of us private sector employees aren't making ignorant generalizations about federal workers. We understand that we didn't stand up for our rights and private sector employers treat us like dirt.

Nobody's mentioned the first day of deer season. Might as well be a holiday in some states.

If Obama gives the day after Christmas off, will he also give the day after New Years Day off?

Congress has statutorily established 11 permanent federal holidays, which are legally applicable only to federal employees and the District of Columbia. Neither Congress nor the President has asserted the authority to declare a “national holiday” which would be binding on the 50 states. This report discusses the history of each federal holiday and explains its rationale where a public record exists

It's always irked me as a fed that we have SO many bs holiday (Columbus day, Presidents day, MLK day), but the two we don't get (Christmas Eve and Friday after Thanksgiving) are the ones that the majority of corporations give to their employees and they are the most family friendly holidays. I'm tired of being ragged for having days like Columbus off. I wish they would redo the federal holiday schedule or give floating holidays like so many corporations have.

Anyone taking bets we won't get December 26th off?

That's what your vacations are for. After 3 years, you get 19 paid vacation days (that's almost one month out of a year), and much more after that. Calm down and go drink some coffee.
