We didn't chose to stay. Slavery ended and black people had NOTHING. Remember, it was illegal for us to even learn to read and write. Where were we going? |
Why are black people disproportionately arrested and convicted of more crimes? Systemic racism. You just made the case for reparations. |
You sound so incredibly ignorant. It's about economics. If black people could not learn to read, buy property, own businesses or get ahead in any way. What do you expect us to do. Redlining was the law until the 1970s. Black people were getting lynched up until the 1960s for voting or just trying to own a business. I was born in the 1960s. |
Reparations of some form could help bridge the wealth gap caused by US policies and on-going systemic racism. Wealth begets wealth. If more black people had wealth, more would have more opportunities. More are likely to have a job. More are likely to stay out of trouble. Reparations (as part of larger social reform) could help break that cycle created by and perpetuated by white people. |
Well, being that most tax cheats are never caught, and most who are caught just pay a penalty, I don't see much danger of that. Second, the most likely outcome of such a revolt is to make more Republicans. Which totally horrifies me as a Democrat, but if the GOP is good at anything, it's finding wedge issues. And this would be a huge one. |
Getting stopped by the police is a symptom of deeper inequality. Fix the root problem - the wealth gap (economic inequality) - and a lot of the other problems go away. |
|
Well maybe. But this is not an argument for reparations. This is an argument for reducing wealth inequality. Which is really quite a different thing. |
But the argument all along has been that systemic racism is the root problem. |
If I had any assurance that these folks would invest in belts, I'd be all in. |
Slavery and other US policies have led to much harm to black people, including the wealth gap. Reparations address the harm *and* wealth gap. |
It’s all intertwined. Slavery, US policies, and systemic racism have all negatively affected black people in many ways, including the wealth gap. The wealth gap is now one of the biggest barriers preventing black people from “living the American dream” to their fullest potential. Reparations can help to heal and remove that barrier. |
Um, they are arrested and stopped more because they are DOING more crime. Why is that hard to process? You think think all the black men (and women) sitting in jail for murder just were minding their own business and they were stopped, arresting, went to trial and convicted of murder (or rape, armed robbery, etc.) Look at crime stats. I’ve posted them before but won’t bother because facts seem to make more difference. But stats show black people commit more crime- by a lot- period. So yes, of course they are going to be arrested and convicted more. Go ahead and throw some money at that problem and see if it makes a difference. It won’t. |
Several reasons why: - less wealth - less education - fewer opportunities - more patrolling & profiling - more rigorous prosecution & sentences |
Ok here's the deal:
Pay black people reparations. Next, pay trillions for the real estate money that is owed to Native Americans. Black people on Native American land too, thus they pay too. |
