It's (finally) time for reparations. It's time for the US to pay its debt.

Right. So you are going to not pay taxes? Because you will not be writing a personal check.

Families of Union Soldiers get reparations too.

As do all descendants of immigrants since 1865.

I think PP is suggesting you will face a taxpayer revolt.

So, what if you are bi-racial? Do you pay, or get paid?

And what if you're descendant of European immigrants who came AFTER slavery had been abolished?

They're exempt from any payment, correct?

They chose to come to a racist country with policies that harmed black people.

You get the good AND the bad.

You chose to stay in this racist country. You get the good AND the bad.

Yes, my ancestors (Quakers & Union soldiers) have tried to lift up others for centuries. And I’m not going anywhere.

It’s time to lift up black people in a meaningful way - eliminate the wealth gap.

You get no credit for that and PP's judgment is based solely on his/her perception of your race.

- another person who's family fought for the Union

Yup.

Let's stop racist thinking.

People are NOT their skin color.

Skin color DOES matter in our society. Two Harvard-educated lawyers head home at 9pm from the gym - one black and one white. Which one gets stopped by cops on the street for “fitting the description”?

Systemic racism exists today. The harm from slavery & Jim Crow continues today.

PP is fine handing over money to billionaires to buy more yachts, but god forbid we hand money over to people we (the US) have harmed so they can lead a better life.

Alright so how many dollars is a traffic worth? Do you get paid per stop? If we pay you now, is it okay to keep stopping and pay your great grandchildren again?

I'm happy to hand money to people who need it to have a better a life. Not happy to hand it over to people who don't need it based on a harm they didn't suffer themselves.

If whites were 12% of our country yet responsible for 50% of all violent crime, you bet it would be the white lawyer who would get stopped.

F U, racist trash

F u too.

I am totally on board with ending systemic racism. I am not on board with the theory that you deserve any money because of slavery. There is a huge difference between these two things.

And my post was meant to point that out. Yeah, the black guy is more likely to be stopped on the way. Let's put an end to that. Were you stopped unfairly twenty years? Many people were. Do you really want money for that? Really? Or would you prefer not to be stopped tomorrow? Which would really help you?

Did the immigrants work for free for 300 years? I included the extra 100 years, bc even though slavery ended, the black codes continued.

Ironic. Wouldn’t that result in privatized prisons having more funding as the tax evaders were locked up? Who benefits most from that?

I liked the idea of tax breaks, or even allowing student loans to be dischargeable debt in a bankruptcy. There are many ways to give an advantage to the disadvantaged. What is done for Native Americans?

You don’t think black people today suffer from the residual harm of slavery and other oppressive, racist US policies (Jim Crow, redlining, etc)?
