Then you should avoid making such general statements. Funny that 4 years isn’t enough for Jack Smith, but it’s more than enough for anyone with whom you don’t agree. |
And that’s your prerogative. The PP should avoid making blanket statements that 4 years isn’t enough to change a complicated system. |

Of all the issues MCPS is facing, I think going back to the old FAA policy being the top priority shows that the education of our students is NOT his #1 priority.

I guess if this is your #1 priority, then yes, Austin is for you. But please stop with the "he brings so much more talent to the table" crap. He brings nothing but his #1 priority to the table, and that #1 priority is not educating all the students in MCPS. No, I am not a SJW. I'm actually a former conservative, but education is super important to me. I find him to be quite divisive and not focused on education, which is what a BOE member should be doing. |
I do not think that many people support him. He's definitely got a personality issue. A previous poster used the term brittle, and I think that sums it up. Do we really want a guy who cannot keep his cool in meetings? Plus he's got some very, very conservative views. And experience what exactly does he have in that vein? |
All those politicians just want a yes man and someone who thinks just like them. In today’s politics there is no room for independent thought, or for unlike points of view. You see it in a politics and you see it on this forum. |
+1 "I find him to be quite divisive and not focused on education, which is what a BOE member should be doing. " |
What I said: "changing superintendents every 4 years isn't a great way to operate." Would you prefer them to have a series of revolving door superintendents? Note that a superintendent is not a president of anything, and is not even an elected office. |
As someone who has yet to make a final decision on a candidate, I will say that having all these politicians attack this one guy so relentlessly is very telling. And in addition to that, all of this negativity is only giving him more name recognition. I truly believe they helped him and not hurt him. I will likely vote for Austin. |
When everyone tells you that your boyfriend is bad news, you should consider the possibility that they're right about your boyfriend. |

And yet a significant number of voters still support him. I trust then voters more than I do politicians. Unless one of the campaigns has paid for polling (which, as far as I know, none of them has, but who knows), there's no way for you to know how many voters support him. |
Agree that it’s suspicious just how much they don’t want him in the mix. Hm. |
Right. Jerry Weast retires in 2011, new superintendent search results in Joshua Starr starting in 2011, in 2015 Joshua Starr's contract isn't renewed and he leaves early in 2015, new superintendent search in 2015 results in a mess and acting superintendent Larry Bowers, new superintendent search in 2016 results in John Smith - and now PP wants to get rid of John Smith and start the fourth superintendent search in 9 years? Who would want to be superintendent of MCPS under those circumstances? |
Why is it suspicious? |
I agree. Normally, people _endorse_ a candidate, instead of coming out against a candidate. On top of that, have council members and the county exec ever gotten involved at this level in a BOE election, and before the primary? It hasn't happened before that I can remember. It puts them in a bad light. I'm glad I voted Austin. When this much of the "establishment" specifically targets him out of 15 candidates, then you know he must have them shaking in their boots.. which is exactly what they need. |
They've endorsed candidates. They've done so in the past, and they're doing it in this election too. Also, the reason these elected officials are elected officials is that the voters chose to elect them. So calling them "the establishment" is kind of odd. I expect that a large majority of county voters voted for at least one of the elected officials on this list in 2018. What's more, the elected officials on the list span basically the entire spectrum of political opinion among elected officials in the county. It doesn't include the Republican Party political opinions, of course, because the Republican Party in the county can't get more than a third of the voters in the county to vote for their county candidates. And it's also a fact that there is no plan for cross-county busing. |
