So, what is wrong with Hardy?

I have been away for a while. I take it the numbers have not been released yet?

That's the other thread.

DCPS profiles were updated the second week of March last year.

DCPS and Principal Pride are still cooking them. Not tasty enough to be served yet.

Not sure about this year. Last year there was a waitlist but everyone on it got called eventually and they didn't quite fill the school.

It's political. Hardy serves as a safety valve for those trying to avoid truly crappy middle schools.

For all those saying, "I'm zoned for Deal but would go to Hardy." There you are! It is open and ready for you.

I don't believe it for a second. For the past 5 years or so, Eaton I think offered the choice of Deal or Hardy. Reportedly just one kid chose Hardy. Having failed playing good cop, now DCPS is paying bad cop. The new choice is Hardy or ... Hardy.

What surprises me is that folks will debate for months on DCUM about uniforms, IB numbers, SEM, etc.. yet fail to appreciate this obvious truth.

That's because it is neither obvious nor truth. If IB parents attend Hardy then there will be no room for OOB students. And nobody is trying to keep IB parents out. In fact, DCPS and Principal Pride have been doing backflips trying to get IB parents to attend.

But the unspoken corollary here is that IB families are unenthusiastic about joining a community comprised predominantly of OOB families avoiding their crappy local options.

That's not unspoken - IB families have said repeatedly that they do not want to attend a school with lots of OOB students. That part is true. And it makes the point - there isn't some conspiracy to keep Hardy as some safety valve for OOB students. The opposite is true -DCPS is trying to get IB students to attend. It's just that IB families won't go.

Because they know that the OOB numbers will increase right along with the IB numbers.

If DCPS were truly interested in Hardy becoming a predominantly IB school, they would reduce enrollment to give the grass roots IB recruitment effort a shot at succeeding.

The Hardy proposition is a bait-and-switch for IB families.

have they been released for all the other schools in DC? Is Pride cooking the numbers for every school in DC?

It's not a bait and switch - it's a prisoner's dilemma. If IB parents attend Hardy, they will crowd out OOB families, just like they did at Deal. Then IB families will have what they want - an almost-all-IB school. But if they don't come, then of course OOB families will attend. DCPS cannot and should not let the school sit empty in case IB families decide to show. There is no nefarious plot or mysterious game at play. If IB families want an IB school, all they have to do is attend.

Mann parent here. I agree with this assessment. If IB attend, OOB will be squeezed out and it will be an IB school. While IB students stay away, the school can and should be filled.
