PSA: Fairfax County Proposed Budget CANCELS Middle School After School Programs

Anonymous
Ridiculous.

Youngkin and the county should properly fund FCPS. It’s majorly underfunded.

Every tiny school system l in the Rest of Virginia can afford beautiful buildings, copious middle school sports and activities, etc, and FCPS somehow cannot?
Anonymous
No one except the superintendent should be earning more than 250k. That's patently absurd.

What is “properly funded” in your view?

FCPS is asking for an historic increase in funding.

FCPS is scapegoating teachers when 60% of the budget is spent on things other than teacher and IA salaries.

Meanwhile, Reid and the SB are pushing for middle school 6-8 and universal pre-k in future years with no idea how much that will cost.

That is ridiculous.

We can cancel many contracts like ST Math, "consulting" where an external party comes and presents a plan like boundary studies, outside investigations, etc. Not to mention anything that cannot be tied to show concrete benefits to students like renaming schools, etc. Dont know how much money this saves, but each and every dollar saved can be better spent by giving this as salary increases to teachers and bus drivers.

No Science Olympiad in middle schools anymore???

Nope. No afterschool anything.

The current state-level school funding formula disfavors FCPS. Those tiny school systems you refer to see NoVa as their cash cow and collectively have enough voting power to prevent meaningful change that would enable FCPS to collect a proportional share of state funding.

I bet those tiny systems don't waste the dollars that FCPS does. And, do you feel the same way about neighborhoods in FCPS? You are complaining about this while wanting to shift kids from affluent neighborhoods to raise the scores of other school neighborhoods.

We left FCPS for a theoretically worse bordering school district. The kids for sure are not as well off. But the education is much better and the best part is the afterschool programs. Even in Middle School, there are sports, dance troupes, tutoring groups, drama programs. My kids are much, much happier and their grades are better too.

Wrong. I am against moving kids to boost the scores of other schools in FCPS. Our school board is terrible. There is definitely waste in FCPS and it should be cut. At the same time, Fairfax should be able to to keep more of its money for FCPS and other public services for residents of Fairfax County.

So, that our School Board and superintendent can waste more funds?

No, so that we can keep NOVA money in-house. We should not be responsible for funding the rest of the state.

There’s plenty of after school programs if you just research for them. The school is no the only org that has them.

Anonymous wrote:This is getting buried in the start times thread, but wanted to ask everyone to please contact the Board of Supervisors and ask them to NOT push this proposed cut through next year. Middle schoolers love the after school program and it give a lot of kids who might otherwise get in trouble or be at home all alone something to do after school a few days a week. Everyone I've talked to has praised this program. Again, please contact your district's supervisor and ask them to say no to this proposal.

*NOTE this is NOT related to the start times at all. This is a COUNTY budget issue, whereas the start times are an FCPS issue.
