PSA: Fairfax County Proposed Budget CANCELS Middle School After School Programs

I actually do think the middle school programs are worth the investment. It may be that the late bus is what costs sooo much money, but you can’t cut those bc boundaries for some are too far away to hike home in the cold and-or dark.

I don't think the county funds the busses, that comes out of the FCPS budget. This is just for the programs themselves.

No, this is NOT related to the start times. This is the COUNTY budget, not the school system budget. Two separate budgets.

I think the teachers that run these clubs get paid extra, so some teachers will actually be losing pay because of this. I guess you don't are about that though.

This is a Board of Supervisors decision, not Reid.

There is a separate thread about start times, this is about middle school after school programs.

We know but we are guessing there is a link between the coincidental cutting of the after school programs and the wanting to make middle school go until 4:40 pm.

12-14 year olds cannot get out at 2:15 and be on their own for 3-5 hours. They will find trouble.

If they’re pushing middle schoolers to be the late start/end schools, I’m okay with it.

Why are today’s 12-15yo kids less capable of being allowed to get out at 2:30 than GenX at the same age? And don’t even start with the nonsense that moms were home. We were the latchkey kids.

Or perhaps fcps can keep the activities but ditch the late busses. Parents who want the activities can pick up their own kids.

I know you mean well PP, but both suggestions revreal an extremely privileged lens. Please take a step back and remember that public schools are meant to provide opportunity and access to all students they serve.

Public schools are “meant to” provide education, which they are doing during school hours. After school extras are not their responsibility.

The issue is not Youngkin.

It is the school board blowing through a 4 billion dollar budget, and the Board of Supervisors wasting money on Universal Basic Income for certain zip codes, and a multi million dollar Covid Memorial. The hidden cost is that the scores of new arrivals who don't speak English costs thousands of dollars more per pupil than the legal residents of FCPS.

Tell your Board of Supervisors and school board to quit wasting money on stupid stuff.

Having looked at the cuts, I guess I should be more informed about what are spending $ on. I am surprised at the cuts to middle school, the HS crossing guards, the car seat inspections, the fire station cuts to personnel and more.

A Covid memorial! What a load of garbage. Nobody wants to remember Covid, least of all the people who lived through that poorly handled pandemic. Who elected these people? They should all be fired next election.

How about rather than creating crappy Covid memorials, we focus on the children who are living?

Gen X latchkey here. It was a terrible experience which I wouldn’t recommend for any MS child.

I really think the school board should move middle school to 9:40 to 4:40, and start elementary around 7:45.

Middle schoolers will be able to sleep in, and will be dupervised from 2:30-4:30 instead of causing trouble at the local shopping centers.
There are no local shopping centers near our MS.

They can't afford afterschool programs but are building....a covid memorial? Is this real?

Some MS programs aren’t that great, like D&D.

Since there won't be at school, they will be home and near shopping centers. 5hats the issue.
