You can require a license to buy ammo or the components to pack your own. Also there are ways to identify and track purchases of bullets after they have been fired.

Metal detectors do work. How many mass shootings happen in airports or courts? Don't play coy. They absolutely do work.

I just told you, the vast majority of courthouses in America DO NOT HAVE METAL DETECTORS at entrances. There have been numerous courthouse shootings in America. Educate yourself.

HOW WILL WE PAY FOR METAL DETECTORS AND THE MULTIPLE OFFICERS REQUIRED TO STAFF THEM AT THOUSANDS OF SCHOOLS ACROSS THE USA?! Put up or shut up.

Most counties and cities place bond or whatever referendums on ballots to finance improvements to schools or other large school expenditures. They would not need to be staffed, although an officer at each school would be even better. These size of expenditures are run of the mill. Nothing extraordinary at all.

1) Deterrent. There's things called deterrents. It's a real thing. Not all crime is prevented by police officers.

Gun policies are the most readily available policy lever but hardly anyone likes to discuss the root causes of these shootings, namely, the culture of masculinity and glorification of violence. And when these discussions are had too often they are over simplified. It is well documented that many of these school shooters were bullied, had relationship problems with women, and did not meet societal definitions of "masculine." These shooters are trying to reclaim masculinity through violence, and we really should look more broadly at issues of gender expectations and the consider the many boys/young men who are bullied and outcast for not fitting in and the consequences it has.

Remember folks: Every 4 years the Secret Service announces that they will *NOT* be allowing guns at the Republican National Convention, and yet there is never even the slightest peep of protest from any of the 2nd Amendment absolutists in the GOP. They all happily go along with the policy because they know, deep down inside, that it keeps them safe.
