This should be a massive alarm bell for the city.

But apparently things were worse in the 90s, something, something, and have you looked at real estate prices?

Starbucks is doing this in several cities, not just DC.

Great new excuse: it’s not just us!

In every one of those cities, including Seattle, Portland, and LA, the cities should be concerned because the stores they are closing are in areas where there is high crime and anti-social behavior that is just allowed to proliferate unchecked.

This is a growing DC problem and a growing national problem related to urban quality of life.

Oh no, not losing several crappy coffee chain stores. That's like the end of the world. Whatever will we do without a few Starbucks. It's practically Armageddon.

You think the issue is losing a few Starbucks instead of half of the businesses at Union Station closing shop and facilitating a negative feedback loop making the place less and less safe.

What’s the tally so far? Barnes and Noble, Einstein Bagels, Dunkin’ Donuts, Wendy’s and Jersey Mikes. I look forward to these closed chain stores to be replaced by a boutique kombucha maker, smoked fish, a makers space and a bike store.

It was, but no longer is. The shooting victims were attending a party in one of the hotel rooms, according to the police.

While the victims were attending a party thrown by paying guests, the city still has 2-4 floors of homeless at the Days Inn. Calls to the police have continued and it has been put on the nuisance property list with the AG, I believe, but no action has been taken yet. The property was sold but neighbors say there was a long ground lease so the Days Inn still operates. The drug dealing out front and in the alley is pretty blatant. The city advertises the property to tourists as a budget option so there are still families and others paying to stay there. Maybe the AG will take action eventually...many of the apartment buildings in the neighborhood have also made the nuisance property list, it's quite a change in the neighborhood. There was a serious incident at The Connecticut House too, with more dv incidents and frequent MPD presence since.

I live on the Hill but have been going to Tenleytown recently, and I was surprised to see the situation around the metro/target/library. Screaming, aggressive drunk dudes, giant piles of belonging, etc. I am conditioned to think of "NW" as utopia with good schools and no crime or nuisances, but guess not!

Mayor Bowser decided it would be inclusive and equitable to disperse the homeless around the various wards. Thanks, Bowser!

Wait, you think that homeless people should be concentrated in the blackest neighborhoods? Stop making me side with Bowser. I'm not used to that and I don't like it.

I actually saw the reverse - a drunken dude screaming and threatening the unarmed security guard who was trying to get him to stop harassing people.

The one good thing that DC Mayor Marion Barry did back in the day was one night he had police cruisers with lights flashing round up prostitutes and March them across the 14th St Bridge to Virginia. DC shoukd get similarly firm with panhandlers.

As for folks hanging out near your house, a sprinkler system has additional uses.

Why are Democrat mayors making their cities sh*tholes?

A lot of DC's homeless aren't even from DC. Ship them back to the states they came from. We have zero obligation to take the rest of the country's homeless.

Leave the homeless alone. You all sound like the ghost of Marley but you haven't learned any lessons yet. Horrible people.

Give them someplace they can pitch their tents in peace.

Jesus you are an idiot. The Federal City Shelter was the largest homeless shelter in the country and was gifted by a billionaire and the only people living nearby were a bunch of Georgetown Law students. DC decided that land was too valuable for a homeless shelter so they closed it, gave it to a developer and dispersed homeless people into all Wards, black and white.

Gotta have that equity!! Don’t want to hurt feelings in the name of prosperity. Union station is a disgrace and that is in Bowser who continues to be elected for one reason only. As has happened in many other large cities. Same result - dumps.
