How was the meeting with the admin meeting last week at BASIS?

Anonymous
I didn't get to go-would love to know what was discussed and concluded-thanks!

I thought it was a good meeting. They plan on doing this regularly. It was an open forum and they stayed for about an extra hour or longer to try and give everyone a chance to get their questions answered.

Again no mention of the make it or break administrator, still flying under the radar and acting as a mere teacher.

I don't think "25 open 6th grade slots" is correct and I'm not sure where you're getting that number. When I asked BASIS staff about that, they said they were fine on numbers. So then, I checked the official DC PCSB site, which for BASIS shows 0 open 6th grade slots, and shows 43 6th graders on the waitlist. https://data.dcpcsb.org/Waitlist-/Charter-School-Wait-List-Data/29u8-mtmd?category=Waitlist-&view_name=Charter-School-Wait-List-Data

I got it from the Basis newsletter, and the response was "moving on" not "oh that's not true" at the meeting so I have to assume it is true and they chose not to answer the question......

That was August. It says so right on the official DC PCSB site.

That spreadsheet raised a question for me, though. It shows 93 kids on the waitlist for 7th, 8th, and 9th grades (combined). I thought Basis didn't admit after 6th. Why are there kids on the waitlist for 7th, 8th, and 9th grades if Basis doesn't admit any new students in those grades?

o

I told the Head of School about that last spring because I thought it might mislead parents into thinking that BASIS admits students in later years, and I believe he called, but it never got fixed. It is indeed the case that the last year any child can be admitted to BASIS DC is 6th grade. I wish they would change it because since Washington Latin takes students through 9th grade, I would hate to have any parent detrimentally rely on those waitlists and assume that BASIS does the same..........

Does BASIS take siblings in those grades? That might be why the computer system is generating a waitlist.

absolutely not. Basis takes no one after 6th, apparently even students who leave, decide relatively early they have made a mistake, and ask to return. But those kids WERE in upper grades so maybe it would have been illegal. I guess losing all your credits when you could have maybe graduated by 11th ain't all it cracked up to be.

And I am positive we have 25 open slots in 6th that now will never be filled because it was in the newsletter. The dumb thing is that on September 12th it was "we have identified a few slots" and now we know the real damage. Huge financial hit. Hope it doesn't happen again, but did not get an answer........

In all fairness to the we-have-25-open-6th-grade-slots poster, the issue was discussed at the meeting with the administration last week. It's not really fair to say that she is hijacking this thread.

Furthermore, those 25 slots point to larger issues : BASIS is having a hard time attracting and retaining students in DC. I think the administration was operating under the theory that "if we build it, they will come" and "if they come, they will stay."

I did not hear Cameron Louis say last Thursday that those slots have been filled. In fact he was silent. They may no longer be "available" because it is after count day, but they are "empty" and I want to make sure this is not a yearly occurence. Don't you? Or would you rather we continue to do more with less and less and less........
