| DD is at a new dc public. she is acting up and claims it's because she's sad because the teachers yell too much there. they also have very little playtime. out of the 10 hrs she's there she gets 25 min on the playground, a bit more if she has PE that day. as far as yelling, it's true, they do. it's disgusting what i've heard. however, that does not give her a pass to act up despite how antsy and frustrated she's feeling. she cried to me tonight saying they are so mean. i have spoken to the principal and he said it's a process and it's better than it was. it's only a year but this breaks my heart. wwyd? |
What school has a 10 hour day, even with aftercare? |
| 8-6 |
| Speak with the teacher about it. Even though you're frustrated, try to come at it from a positive angle. Maybe speak with the teacher and ask him/her about the expectations he/she has for the students, and then ask what you can do to ensure that your daughter is successful and following directions in school. |
| How old is your daughter? |
| 6 |
|
If I was at work from 8-6 with no free time and my bosses yelled at me all the time, I'd be miserable too.
Sounds like a crappy school. Charter or public? |
+1 This is awful, OP. Your poor little girl... 6 years old and subjected to all of this? Guaranteed recipe for hating school. I would do whatever I had to do to get her moved, or out of there. Can you start looking now at privates for next year? |
| I wouldn't wait until next year to transfer. I would shoot for after the holiday break. |

it's public school. and no, i can't take her out this year unfortunately. makes me sick that she got into janney but i couldn't figure it out logistically so we are stuck at this substandard east of the park school in our neighborhood until we can move.
she said her main classroom teacher doesn't yell at her much, thank goodness, but it's the ones on the playground and aftercare |
sounds like your child is at a substandard after care, not school. can you pool with other parents and pay a babysitter to pick her up (with other kids) and take her to the playground /home? ps you say that your child is 6 (presumably K or 1st grade) and got into Janney as OOB? I thought Janney did not have any slot for OOB on those grades |
|
janney called me in mid-september for first grade, yes. she wasn't crying then about the yelling or i might have tried harder to figure it out.
yes, true, it's the recess and aftercare that are the main issue. i will try to pick her up earlier than 6pm when i can |

Yelling happens. Take a good hard look at the behaviors that are running rampant in the school. I have a girl who likes to choke other kids. we yell to keep her from attacking other kids. Or how about our 100+ kid recess, with two staff members supervising?
I work in DCPS but would NEVER send my kid to one of our schools. |
Glad she's a priority "when [you] can!" |
Yelling by teachers is definitely a persistent trait in DCPS. I'm not really sure why this seems to be more the case here than what I understand from friends to be the situation in the 'burbs. |
