My five year old still sleeps in her crib

Anonymous
I have a Dd who is five next month. She has a toddler bed that she never uses. She says she feels safer in the crib. We recently bought a twin bed for but have not yet set it up. If you had a child this old who still loved her crib, how did you wean them off of it? I got some sheets she is excited to use but I still anticipate a lot of angst when we try to remove the crib. This seems so abnormal to me. What do opi do?

Take the crib away. How does she still fit?

That should say, what do other people do?

You tell her when she is 5 that she needs to sleep in a big bed and you dismantle the crib and give it away or sell it.

I think most parents would have taken the crib away by now. She's got you wrapped around her little finger and she knows it. You're in for a tough, tough life if you can't say no.

Make sure the bed is in the corner and get a guard rail. My 4 year old was reluctant too but we sent her to the grandparents for the weekend and we took away the crib, painted, had the bed looking pretty with comforter/pillows and put up new pictures and she was vey happy in the end.

My kids went from the crib to a twin mattress on the floor. We removed the crib from the room. Once the kids were comfortable on the size of the mattress and didn't roll out of bed, we put the mattress on the frame.

No advice from me--just want to say she sounds sweet.

Let her use the crib. What's your problem?

I wouldn't really care where she slept, except I'd be concerned that she might be teased about it at some point if she has friends over.

Ditto guard rail. Even when they didn't need it anymore, both of my kids liked the security of knowing it was there.

This. I would let it go for now.

I laughed when I saw this. My 5 year old boy is still in a crib. I know it is ridiculous. He sleeps 12 hours a night in it though. However, I need the crib for his infant sister. The whole situation is silly. Who still sleeps in a crib at 5? It seems so uncomfortable.

I agree - sounds very sweet!
Can you put a twin bed against the wall and add a guard rail so that she feels really cozy? When I was a kid, I felt much safer at night if I made a nest of pillows before going to bed. Even as an adult, when I have a hard time sleeping, I ask my husband to put his arm around me

Really, I have no criticisms as my 4 yo twins, who have their own twin beds, somehow wind up with me every morning by 5 a.m.

A crib sounds heavenly if they'll stay in it.
