Rand Paul visits Ferguson and has some very interesting comments

Paul is the first potential 2016 contender to visit the city

Sen. Rand Paul met with civil rights leaders Friday in Ferguson, Missouri, the city torn apart by racial unrest following the August shooting of an unarmed black teenager by a white police officer. During his visit, the Republican Senator, who is seen as a likely presidential candidate, stated his concerns about long prison sentences for nonviolent crimes, the loss of voting rights for felons and military programs to give unused equipment to local police departments.

“Given the racial disparities in our criminal justice system, it is impossible for African-Americans not to feel like their government is particularly targeting them,” Paul wrote in an opinion piece for TIME this summer.

Everybody knows this. I guess it takes a bonafide conservative to say it.

Good for Rand Paul. On the D side, possible pres candidate Jim Webb has spoken eloquently about this and has sought to lead on the issue.

I'm a conservative. Sometimes Rand is spot on when he talks about the excesses of some of our government programs, regulations and agencies. But there are times when he is to the Left of George McGovern and other times when he is just incomprehensible i.e. much of his foreign policy speech. I don't think he'll be a serious candidate.

jim webb would be an excellent candidate in the populist jacksonian mold.

I can see a Webb/Warren populist democrat ticket gain lots of traction to be honest.

Funny how some people define "left". In the past, conservatives were isolationist. And in the future one can hope they are not racist.

Rand Paul points out racial disparity in sentencing. If you replace "racial" with "ideological" and "sentencing" with "tax exempt status" you have a conservative cause celebre. And on top of it, you have one that has been studied to death, for generations!

Actually its liberalsm that has proven itself an utter disaster time and time again, seems the people have realized that. Don't believe me? Check the polls.

Well I'd enjoy a discussion on left vs right conservative vs liberal. How todays liberals are modern liberals very far removed from classical liberalism. Its conservatives who seek to protect the ideals of classical liberalism; limited government, individual liberty, free markets, rule of law and national sovereignty. I find modern liberals most illiberal of all. And you prove it… Really you gotta go and insinuate I'm a racist?? That's pathetic. No point in engaging in a dialogue here...

Most of that was accumulated under "conservative" administrations.

Everyone likes their credit cards, but they hate their bills. This is a human problem, not a liberal one. Just try to cut defense spending and the right squeals.

As a conservative we need more police with better equipment. The only way to deal with a problem like Ferguson is with a strong show of force and a lot more arrest.

Defending our country is in the Constitution. Kind of hard to defend without DOD.
