Thank you. It’s ok for music to be fun. But saying that she doesn’t tackle topics beyond her relationships is inaccurate. Here are a few ts songs that address your topics of choice: gun violence/voting rights: only the young forgiveness: innocent depression: evermore, this is me trying, forever winter (suicide) anxiety: nothing new, peace, castles crumbling, mirrorball, the archer, never grow up grief/loss: bigger than the whole sky I could keep going. Yes, I’m a swiftie (obviously). |
| I'm not a swiftie and don't like a lot of her music and I find the suggestion that she should be writing and recording protest music horrifying. Please no. Let her sing her pop songs about the stuff she actually cares about. We do not need her to become the Sean Penn of pop music. |
"Only the Young" discusses subjects such as school shootings, Donald Trump, and vote-tampering concerns in its lyrics. Upon release, music critics praised Swift's lyricism on United States politics, addressing matters such as gun violence and mass shootings. Some critics have noted it as Swift's most politically charged song yet. Reflecting Swift's political disillusionment, "Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince" is a protest song that uses a high school imagery to critique the contemporary American political climate; it likens the political scene to a high-school setting |
It is funny, I wrote the list of possible “shite” above, but mostly because it IS ridiculous to think about TS singing protest songs. She is a pop princess- elevated to queen role now. She has team that is clearly extraordinary, but she is still a pop singer. There isn’t anything wrong with that UNTIL her fans become so very adamant that any negative thought about her is misogynistic. Or the general fan outrage that somehow the music industry is taking away money from its richest performer. Or that she is single handedly running the entire business. Just let that crap go and let her sing pop. |
| I guess I’m more of a feminist than I realized because I support a woman’s right to choose what art to make and who to date. |
Feminism is supporting a woman’s right to make art, but also supporting other women’s right to say they don’t like that art without hurling insults. It is like free speech. Sometimes standing up for free speech sucks, but you have to allow it because otherwise you become the oppressor. |
I'm a radical feminist and agree with you. All of the Taylor/Travis hate is tiresome. |
Oh, I am with you completely! Let her be a pop princess. I will consume that with a spoon every day of the week. My only point was that the themes of her songs go deeper than what a lot of people think. It irritates me when she is relegated to “teenage love song” status. |
This isn't Sesame Street. |
“You Need to Calm Down” |
"Soon you'll get better" Is probably one of the first songs the made me tear up. Taylor just has a way with lyrics. I'm not a fan of all of her songs, but she covers such a wide range of emotions and topics it is easy to find one of her songs that sticks with you. |
Actually just kidding, "Ronan" was the first song to make me tear up. |
Free speech is not akin to feminism. Free speech also supports saying women are not equal to men. |
Holy cow that’s good! |
| Ronan made me a Swift fan. The way Taylor was able to take his mom’s blog and give musicality to it was heartbreaking and amazing. |
