Does your period hit you even harder than usual now that you're in your 40s?

I'm talking heavy bleeding, heavy cramps, headache, exhaustion and inertia, and now even a vague feeling of nausea all the way through it. I'm 44, and have been on the same low dose BC pill for years (which used to mitigate all the crap I've just listed, but doesn't seem to any more). Should I go off the pill? This really sucks and I missed work today. My mom had her menopause very late (55) so I guess I'm in perimenopause, but still get regular periods.

Anyone else going through this nonsense? Especially the nausea?

I'm 41, am on my second Mirena, and don't get my period anymore. It's awesome.

Yes. I had to have uterine ablation.

Yes, I'm 45 and experiencing what you are. And I used to love my bc. Hope someone has an answer.

Wait until the periods in your 50s! Ugh. Like your mom, I just turned 55. Just had another period last week. Sigh.

I'm 36, and in the past few years it's been longer, heavier, starts and stops, awful cramps, heart palpitations, hot flashes, that week+ is just awful. My gyn suspects I'm already in peri, but we haven't done any bloodwork.

Definitely when I went through my 40s. Heavy bleeding. It's "normal". Finally it all stopped.

I had the opposite - very light bleeding through 40s. I had my last period at 47. I guess I was lucky in that sense. I had terrible insomnia though; much better after periods ended.

Me too. Had mine at 44. When I had to change plans for camping one weekend because I got my period, I realized my period had taken over my life.

OP here. Good to know others are going through this. What, if anything, should I do? I don't think I need ablation... the bleeding is heavy, but manageable. I guess I should just wait it out. Ugh. My doctor (last time I saw her... about 10 months ago) said I don't need to go off the pill.

Are you sure you don't have endometriosis?

Mine got very heavy in my mid 40s. I just turned 49 and they are still painful but becoming somewhat lighter again. My doctor actually said that going back on the pill might make them more manageable. Other than missing one or two cycles over the past two years, I am still every 28 days like clockwork.

Yes. My GYN just told me it's probably adenomyosis. Fairly common. I'm scheduled for a Mirena IUD later this week.
