What does it mean that ISIS "beheads" its victims?

I don't want to watch any videos. I want to understand exactly what ISIS does when it "beheads" innocent people -- In part to help me understand their psychology (i.e. how long they are willing to inflict pain on someone in an up close way) and in part b/c I assume it would be kind of hard to separate a person's head from their body. From the first report of a beheading, I was imagining a giant sword being swung by an ISIS person to cut off the victim's head... but why wouldn't the victim duck or dodge the sword?

The person has a hood over their head, with their hands behind their back. They wouldn't know when to duck... and it wouldn't change the outcome anyway.

There has been some speculation that the captives are drugged before the beheading, to lessen the resistance. Hopefully this is the case :-/

That's what I was afraid of... not that you would inform me of that, but that the victims were butchered for period of time and suffered.

I don't want a live image in my brain, but, I feel that I should be aware of what it means and what it tells us about ISIS so that I am can have an opinion about the US engaging in war.

What the heck difference does it make if it's a quick blow with an axe on a block or a sawing of the neck? They are murdering people who have committed no crime and broadcasting the executions on the internet for propaganda purposes. They have gotten their hands on lethal weapons and are terrorizing towns, killing the men, taking the women into sexual slavery (oh, sorry, forced "marriages") and trying to disrupt civil society by destroying all infrastructure. They may talk about Allah, but they are really psychopaths who have found an outlet for their bloodlust. They have managed to do what people thought was impossible and put the US, Iraq, Iran, Syria, Turkey, and the Kurds into violent agreement with each other and having some very strange cooperation going on.

You can have an opinion on whether you want to send your kid to fight this, but not on the basis of whether they use a long or short sword.

It means that they are following verses in the Qur'an and Hadiths that talk about beheading. Not sure why they don't bother to cut the fingers off also though.

for example:

8:12- “I will instill terror into the hearts of the unbelievers: smite them above their necks and smite all their finger-tips off.”

47:4- “Therefore, when ye meet the Unbelievers, strike off their heads; then when you have made wide Slaughter among them, carefully tie up the remaining captives”

When Muhammad conquered the Qurayza Jewish tribe, he had all the males, history books say somewhere between 600 and 800, beheaded and buried in trenches. The women and children were taken as slaves. He took Rayhana as his, but he released her from slavery and made her one of his wives.

PP here, I want to make note that I know the bible has insanely violent disgusting verses too, but it is a bit different because the bible is considered a compilation of writings by different people with some supposed "direct words of God", where the entire Qur'an is considered the exact word for word of God dictated directly to Muhammad, so it's not as easy for some really zealous believers to disregard certain violent verses as it is for Christians to disregard violent and disgusting verses contained in the Bible.

Thanks... I think I have enough to understand the intent and logistics.

I don't consume violence (media or real life) on a regular basis (other than the nightly news!). I remember watching Silence of the Lambs for the first time and being sick to my stomach b/c it was just beyond any thought that had ever entered my head. I couldn't understand how any writer could even come up with that story line. Unfortunately, real life provides a lot of inspiration...

Then why do they call Islam a peaceful religion? This is disgusting. Religion makes me sick the more I learn about it.
