Ranking of students to recommend for HGC

Anonymous
Our school ranks all the third graders who apply for HGC. Is this required by the county? Does anyone know if the school also provides additional insight to the selection committee?

The selection committee gets the same info for all kids no matter what school the kids go to.

1) Teacher's Recommendation

2) School's Ranking

3) HGC test scores

do you know the base for ranking? Can't be report card!

That is helpful. So they get a recommendation and a ranking. Just a ranking seemed odd to me because one child could be particularly strong in one area and another child in another and it could be difficult to rank (unless the rank is something like who do they think would most benefit/whose needs aren't being met, etc.).

Selection committee also gets other test scores, right? And grades and parent's application.

This ranking system by 3rd grade teachers for HGC is not necessarily based on grades, test scores or other transparent metrics.

What's it based on then?

I hadn't heard that home schools ranked the kids who apply to HGC. Is this done at all schools?

According to a previous poster it is all schools. I know that is what our school does. Do not like it.

If one needs another ranking not based on the entry test then leave it to wise men and women to guess the components of such a ranking? This is a reality check for those in Wonderland!

I have no idea what this means.

Alice, I understand your predicament.

I wonder if they even get to the ranking if the scores are high. Seems like mcps would not want to deny admission to high scorer and have to justify denial on grounds of subjective ranking.

At the parent meeting the organizers stated that the parent rec was a significant consideration and the tests are only one piece of admissions.

Parent recommendation is useless. They are vastly more parents recommending their children get in to the HGC then actually get in. I am sure the teacher recommendations have a much, much more closer correlation to those who actually get in!l
