Disagreeing with someone does not make that poster or anyone else "a bad person." A solution to disagreement is not to wish evil on other people and especially not their children. We can have very differing opinions, even opinions that one side deems controversial. A differing opinion, even one you dislike very much, is not a character flaw or a mark of evil. That person posted a civil, well thought out, mature, reflective response. I do not agree with everything she wrote, but appreciate her thoughtfulness and contributions to the discussion. Adults have to stop with the whole "if you don't agree 100% with me, then you are evil and you and your kids need to suffer" approach. It is not productive, nor is it how a free, civil, intelligent and open society solves issues. It also sets a terrible example to young people on how to maturely, civilly and intellectually solve issues, debate and disagree with each other. It brings adult discussions to the intellectual level of a very immature child. Argue your positions respectfully. Find common ground where you can move forward and realize you might not be successful in swaying others or achieving your goals. Don't insult others who view things differently than you do. |
My kid is moving. He will be fine. |
The split feeder is not an issue. Families have overwhelming said they value split feeders. Most split feeders in Scenerio 4 stated as split feeders. Given the geography of Fairfax county, split feeders will always remain. You 'fix' nothing. |
Adding that split feeders ranked at the bottom of country-wide concerns per the boundary survey. |
I'm in the Robinson Pyramid and we advocated to keep our split feeder (and thankfully the latest Scenerio kept our split). |
Didn't FCPS just reach an agreement with the county that will allow the Centreville renovation/expansion to proceed? Between the hundreds of additional seats vacant at Herndon and the capacity that may yet be added at CVHS, there is no need for Western HS. It's a shiny toy they couldn't pass up, so they bought it with no real understanding of how many kids it could initially accommodate or what programs it could offer. That's why they are moving ahead with just two grades, no VHSL sports, and this convoluted opt-in/opt-out scheme, where it appears some may opt in only to find out later they aren't within the final boundaries and have to provide their own transportation. That's nothing to be jealous about, but if you think this School Board isn't inconsistent when it comes to spending money and then turning around and saying money is tight (and others have to bear the brunt of their poor fiscal management), your own sense of entitlement has really taken over. |
No. That is the result of the poor planning that we see across FCPS by our leadership. The school is needed. No matter how many times you claim it is not. Chantilly is over 2900 with trailers and modulars galore. Westfield is over 2750. There is a lot of new construction in both areas. Lots. Oakton is over capacity. South Lakes is close to capacity. Centreville is over capacity. Do you think the expansion will be complete any time soon? There is nowhere to shift. Agree the roll out of the new school is problematic. They should have stopped the other boundary process and done this first. I think Reid has stars in her eyes for a 22nd Century program (her words). But, the need is a school to serve the community and the students--not her resume. And, there are no seats nearby. |
|
They opened the last school with two grades and no sports, at least that is what I have read. They are planning on VHSL sports in the second year but no later then the third year. I have not heard about the Centerville permits being approved. I can see going ahead with the renovation but there is no need for the expansion, one would hope that was cancelled.
There are some seats at Herndon but not that many. |
Not enough to solve the problem. Go drive around Westfield and 28--they are throwing up townhouses and condos on every free bit of space--zoned for Westfield and Chantilly. |
The shift is likely to drop Westfield and SLHS to 85% capacity, that will open up a good amount of space. And classes are starting to decrease in size. I think Chantilly and Centerville will drop to capacity maybe a bit below. Oakton is not likely to see a lot of movement, it depends if the Crossfield parents who want to stay at Oakton get their way. |
They own the school now and they should make the best of it but you are lying when you claim there is nowhere to shift because they are sitting on hundreds of empty seats at Herndon and the boundaries could have been adjusted to move Chantilly kids into Westfield and Westfield kids into Herndon. Had this "opportunity" not arisen, that's what they could and likely would have ended up doing. There was no particular urgency to a new 2000-seat western HS, as evidenced by the multiple delays and a CIP that didn't even contemplate construction for another decade. And, if you'd ever listened to prior Facilities presentations to the School Board, you'd know that their attitude was that anything in the CIP past five years out was highly uncertain and subject to cancellation or further deferral. At least be honest. |
200 kids does not move the needle on the problem and you know that. |
Until you can provide hard data on the projected student yields, this is just prone to exaggeration. There is new construction taking place and in the pipeline in lots of other areas as well. |
I see you and honesty continue to fight it out. Herndon HS currently has 700 extra seats, not 200. It's the epitome of greed to demand and receive large additions to schools in western Fairfax and then demand a new school on top of it because the schools are "too big." |
South County started out like that. In a few years, they became a sports powerhouse. And academically, SoCo holds their own. |
