Maury Elementary in Rosemont

Anonymous
My husband and I just bought a house in Rosemont. Our son is an infant but I was wondering about the school. I've reviewed the testing data, but I'm more interested in the quality of teaching, your experience with your child's education at Maury, the sense of community, extracurriculars. I notice the kids wear uniforms when I walk my son to our nanny share. It also seems to be a small school with parents walking kuds to school in the morning. I'm Catholic and was considering St. Mary's or another private school, but Maury is so close and I want to support public school. For a new mom like me, how do you think the school will be in five years when my son is headed to kindergarten? What has your experience been? I know I'm far from having to worry but I'd also like to support my local school. Are their fundraisers or parents groups? I noticed a Facebook group to improve the playground and green space. When I went to vote there, the school looked pretty rundown inside.

Former MacArthur parent here. Our friends who had kids in Maury were satisfied with it. That said, most of them fled ACPS as middle school approached.

True, but in ACPS you never know if that means for the better or worse.

Neighborhood will have parents of both elementary and middle school kids. I'd ask the people with actual experience in the schools.

My kids went to Maury and, overall, had a great experience. It's a small school with a strong sense of community and a lot of actively involved parents.

Ds goes there. We've been happy with it. I teach I FCPS, and it seems on par. There is a very active parent community.

It's hard to tell what will happen in 5 years. There are rumblings of redistricting.

Also, you should verify that you in fact are zoned for Maury. Don't take for granted that because you are in the Rosemont area and that seems to be the closest school that you are in fact in that zone. Also, realize your neighbors may have transferred into the school so that's not an accurate way to judge either. Other area schools are Mt. Vernon and Jefferson-Houston. ACPS has the boundary map on their website.

OP, you have a lot of time to learn about the schools from the neighbors. Right now, enjoy your baby.

Thanks. We are zoned for Maury. I am enjoying baby time but also am very interested in supporting the public school. It is fun to see the kids walking to school with their parents and saying hi to my little guy while we walk to the nanny share. We specifically bought a house that was in Maury and not Mount Vernon or Jefferson-Houston. It was one of the reasons we bought in Rosemont over Del Ray.

What is the redistricting talk? Anywhere to find out the proposed redistricting?

May I ask current parents what is the Schoolyard Initiative at Maury about? Very vague info on the facebook group.

There are no specific plans to redistricting, just talk at this point. It probably will happen, but there is no plan out yet for review. The school yard initiative is to update and fix the playground area and some other parts of the Maury yard. I'm sure if you reach out to one of the parents involved they can fill you in. You may also want to go to a pta meeting to learn more about the school, but if you live close to the Jefferson Houston bouncary it is possible you would be redistricted if that happens. I really wouldn't worry about it at this point.

The last statement on redistricting was that it wouldn't take place for the 2014-15 year (which has, of course, started), but was expected to take effect for the 2015-16 year. No further details have been announced, so it's still up in the air whether this will happen.

There's no way this will get done for 2015-2016. They haven't even started the process (which will be slow and painful.) If they started now, then maybe for 2016-2017, but I'm betting that the process won't even start before next school board election.

I've heard nothing on the redistricting front. Schoolyard Initiative is a PTA and school program to improve the playground.
